Uniform Cigarette Packaging Mandatory In Australia

21 February 2012 – Australian legislation mandates a new cigarette packaging bill in an effort to further reduce smoking, banning the inclusion of grotesque images of human parts and organs affected by smoking in packets.

Australia successfully launched regulations on packed cigarettes and mandates all cigarette brands across the country to have more than just the health advisory label while some packets had pictures of grotesque bodily organs weathered away by smoking. Legislation turned to plain packaging, making it mandatory for cigarette companies to use a uniform package that only lusts the brand and variety of cigarettes.

An olive-green colored generic design will become the norm in exchange for the bright and salesy colors and designs. The logos and designs of world famous cigarette brands would be stricken out, to be replaced by plain, white typeface that would serve to identify the brand and variety of smoke the pack carries, along with the cigarette brand and variation to differentiate it from other brands and varieties.

However, some people decry how the new regulation can go against existing international trade law, like those set by the UN and its sub-governing bodies on market and trade. On the other hand, Australia’s dedication to reduce smoking levels within their country is commendable, and they even plan on helping impoverished countries do the same by donating funds to the World Health Organization for that endeavor

Depriving cigarette brands of their identifying logo, colors, and even taglines can be damaging to the advertising power of the brand. Bland, generic packaging also has a subliminal effect that can be more powerful than the hoped for overt effects of the first anti-smoking bill passed.

As some would argue, preventing people from smoking should only be as important as stopping those who already are. So far, the contemporary quit smoking Brisbane campaigns are helping out in this endeavor of lessening the number of smokers.
