Low-Glycemic Diet Beneficial, Cancer Researchers Claim

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

New York, NY — (June 6, 2012) — Earlier this year, researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that a low-glycemic-load diet will reduce a key inflammation marker in overweight and obese adults.

Glycemic load refers to how a specific amount of a carbohydrate food affects blood sugar levels.  The researchers fed an identical macronutrient combination to participants; only the type of carbohydrate was different—either low-glycemic-load (LGL) or high-glycemic load (HGL).  The LGL carbohydrates came from whole foods while the HGL carbohydrates were from sugar and processed foods.

C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were 22% lower in the LGL group.  The researchers concluded that a steady diet of HGL foods will increase inflammation in overweight and obese people, and most likely everyone else too.

“High blood sugar levels result in serious health problems,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “Excessive intake of concentrated carbohydrate foods is the principal source of sugar.  Sources of concentrated carbohydrates are grains, processed foods made from them and all refined sweeteners.  Our bodies are not adapted to handle regular intake of these foods.”

“An excess is any amount exceeding our capacity to store or burn as energy,” the Greisels.  “LGL foods are digested more slowly and have more of a time-release effect on blood glucose levels, but even these can be overconsumed.  Fruits are often lumped in the same category as refined and processed concentrated carbohydrates in the HGL group.  This is a mistake.  To be healthy, you need to build your diet around the same kinds of fresh whole foods that humans have consumed for millennia.”
