D-2 Vs D-3

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Vitamin D is a major vitamin that I believe most people are somewhat aware of or at least have heard of it. I have spoken and written about Vitamin D and its importance to the human body numerous times in the past years. Vitamin D is one of those ingredients of many “fortified” foods we find on grocery store shelves. But what do we really know about that fortification?

Here I will continue with this short series on ingredients of foods we find readily available in both standard and “natural” food stores. The series began with the article called Carrageenan and You, so if you have not yet read that one you may want to…

There are a few different types of Vitamin D’s in our world today. D-1, D-2, D-3, D-4, etc… The ones that concern us most are Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D-3. I have talked a great deal about the incredible health benefits of Vitamin D-3 before. I have spoken how D-3 can create strong bones and high bone density (staving off Osteoporosis and Osteomalacia), how it can keep the body from developing Rickets and many forms of cancers; D-3 is one of the most important vitamins in the supporting and building of our immune systems too. D-3 is also important for healthy skin pigmentation since it supports all the major organs of which our skin is included. Vitamin D-3 deficiency has been linked to the onset of Multiple Sclerosis and in pregnant women gestational diabetes and under developed and sized infants as well. So it is quite clear just how important Vitamin D is in our lives.

Since we know how healthy it is for us we would usually feel good about a product that says “Vitamin D fortified”.  However, what exactly does that mean??? Vitamin D fortified does not specify what kind of D; it only says “D”. Many products will actually state what kind of Vitamin D is in the product and when it does, it states D-2. OK, so what is the difference between D-2 and D-3?
