What’s the Best Type of Roller for Latex Paint? Recommendations from Phoenix Painting and Drywall

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Phoenix Painting & Drywall is the valley’s leading painting and drywall contractor. They handle any type of paint job including not only residential, but commercial as well. When it comes to choosing the right roller for latex paint, a mistake can make or break a painting session.  To help guide those do-it-yourself junkies, Phoenix Painting and Drywall released this article:

The type of latex paint (semi-gloss, gloss, etc.) will play a critical role in what kind of roller you need to use for the best results.  But not only is matching this element important, you must remember that the quality of your paint and rollers can make all the difference.  Don’t be afraid to spend a little extra, because you won’t regret it when the finish product comes out perfect.

Now, the two rollers to consider are foam or nap.  First, let’s go over what is a good roll cover?  A good roll cover has a moisture resistant plastic or phenolic core.  You’ll need your nap roller to have high-quality synthetic material, and your foam roller to have dense foam.  These characteristics ensures that roll cover remains intact, paint is laid on smoothly, and no bubbles or inconsistencies form.

Foam rollers are generally a an ideal roller for latex paint.  Paint that is thick like oil paints don’t turn out quite so nice.  Foam rollers also are perfect for smooth surfaces, and are mostly not as good on rough surfaces.  Other characteristics of the foam roller is that it absorbs a lot of paint, but applies it in thin layers without lap marks.  This is why it’s so ideal for large smooth surfaces.  Nap rollers on the other hand, are a more well-rounded roller.  Can be used on any type of surface (well most types), and is ideal for latex paint.  So to make a short story even shorter, choose foam rollers on smooth (preferably) large surfaces, and make nap rollers your choice for rough uneven surfaces.
