Why rheumatic diseases affect mostly women?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Articular discomfort and joint swelling, stiffness, fatigue, aches and pains (especially in changing weather), weakness or muscle pain, discomfort during walking, fever occurring repeatedly… are just some of the symptoms that describe rheumatic diseases.

Although statistics show that worldwide more than 150 million people suffer from various forms of rheumatism, the most common being osteoarthritis, it seems that women aged between 20 and 50 years are the most at risk of developing this disease. Also, rheumatoid arthritis “prefers” women, this condition being met twice more common in women. In addition, rheumatoid arthritis tends to occur in women at a younger age than men and symptoms seem to be more severe and in greater numbers for women.

Why does rheumatism affects mostly the women? I do not know the exact causes of rheumatism, but there are certain factors that could explain why the incidence of rheumatic diseases is higher in women:

– Menopause: many women are diagnosed with rheumatic diseases around menopause, which means that hormonal factors play an important role in the onset of rheumatic diseases, even if they were present before, but without obvious symptoms.

– Pregnancy: this period seems to attenuate symptoms of joint disorders, but they reappear stronger post-partum. Also, women who breastfed approximately 2 years present a low risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis or other rheumatic diseases compared to those who are not breastfeeding or are breastfeeding for just a few months.

Whatever the cause of rheumatic diseases, the more we understand and get to know these diseases, the easier it will be to adopt healthy habits to prevent / alleviate symptoms.

Recommendations for alleviating joint pain in the winter

As the winter pains become more acute because of the cold, moisture and temperature changes, we recommend the following precautions and prevention:

– Nutrition plays a significant role in producing rheumatic diseases. For example, adopting a diet low in fat, animal protein and calories, produces a decrease of inflammatory substances in the blood. On the other hand, overeating cause weight gain, which puts more pressure on the joints, leading in time to the emergence of degenerative rheumatic diseases (arthritis). To maintain healthy joints, we recommend foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids (walnuts, flaxseed, tofu, zucchini, soybeans, olive oil, avocado etc.) with a role in reducing inflammation. Calcium is another beneficial element for rheumatism. Rich sources of calcium are green leafy vegetables (except spinach containing oxalic acid and result in blocking calcium absorption), sesame seeds, broccoli, yogurt, almonds, soy. Do not forget to add to your plate foods that rich in vitamin C (tomatoes, peppers and oranges), involved in preventing cartilage loss.

– There are also teas with anti-inflammatory effect that can alleviate the discomfort of joint, for example: Viola tricolor, Galium odoratum, Salix, Agrimonia eupatoria, big apple peel untreated, birch leaves, horsetail, Nettle and dandelion leaves, Restharrow etc.

– Lack of physical exercise promotes obesity with a direct effect on the joints, which bear the pressure of excess weight. So, do regular exercise to prevent excess weight. Exercises beneficial for joints are: Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi. Dancing can be a very enjoyable and beneficial activity for articular system (excluding performance dancing).

– Another factor is the adjuvant therapies or spa cures. Therapies such as mud baths, mud wraps and massage, warm herbal baths and the Bazna salt baths, and hydrokinetotherapy physical therapy can prevent and alleviate joint pain. In rheumatic diseases, acupressure meridians can help relieve appropriate pain. If pain is intense and systemic, several sessions of acupuncture are recommended. Most often, however, resorting to classic drug therapy, consisting of analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs (without steroids) is recommended for fast effect. However, these drugs can have adverse effects, especially for people suffering from digestive problems, heart disease, diabetes, so this treatment cannot be administered on the long term.
