Gardening Is Good for Your Mental Health, Study Suggests (Video)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

by N.Morgan

Gardening is not only great exercise and a way to commune with nature, but a recent study suggests it is also great for mental health.

A recent study conducted by Bakker Spalding has found that 88% of people find that mental wellbeing is a key benefit for spending time in the garden.

Perfect timing you might say, as the 10th October heralds World Mental Health Day – a day when perhaps everyone should up sticks and get into their gardens to do their mental health a world of good.

Kathryn Rossiter, CEO of Thrive, one of the UK’s leading charities in disability and gardening says that “as well as the strong therapeutic value of gardening it can help people connect with others, reducing feelings of isolation.

It makes us more active, gaining both physical and mental health benefits.”

Elaine Kennedy Thompson, who has been a keen gardener for over 40 years, is helped considerably by spending time in the outdoors.

She suffers from Fibromyalgia and has bouts of depression, however, has cited gardening as a great help. She says “Gardening gives me a great opportunity to get outside. With my depression, in particular, any boost is a good thing”

Thrive, a charity which aims to help people suffering from mental health issues or disabilities was established in 1978 and uses gardening to bring about positive changes to the lives of people who live with disabilities or ill health.

The charity has several centers where Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) takes place – Battersea Park, London, Saltwell Park, Gateshead and King’s Heath Park, Birmingham.

So perhaps rather than staying inside reading a book, or perhaps watching television this winter, you should get your hands dirty – the perfect antidote to the stressful world we live in today.

      Hello Angle#3,

Charlie here. Man was made to “keep” the garden. The scientist has found out it is an excellent exercise also. People who garden seems to have long lives. More than runners or “exercisers”.

I would not doubt it is therapeutic also.

I have managed to stay in shape and be mentally fit also by gardening. As you know I grow doughnuts.

Or am trying too. So far no luck.

      Signed,

Charlie (it would help if I didn’t eat them as buds Cute buggers)
