Study Finds that Lack of Sleep Makes Your Brain Eat Itself (Video)

by N.Morgan

Sleep deprivation, also known as insufficient sleep or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having enough sleep. It can be either chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. A chronic sleep-restricted state adversely affects the brain and cognitive function.

According to a recent study, a lack of sleep can cause parts of the brain’s synapses to be ‘eaten’ by other brain cells. Astrocytes play an essential role in regulating sleep. They are a cell in the brain that get rid of worn-out cells. The study discovered that sleep-deprived mice had more active astrocytes than well-rested mice, meaning the brain started eating itself.

“We show for the first time that portions of synapses are literally eaten by astrocytes because of sleep loss,” research leader Michele Bellesi told New Scientist.

Multiple studies have proved the importance of getting a good night’s sleep for physical and mental health. A lack of sleep can lead to an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and more.

SLEEP & BRAIN HEALTH

Sleep is vital to the health of our brains.  The scientific review-of-research article The Neuroprotective Aspects of Sleep, states:

Sleep has been proven to improve memory recall, regulate metabolism, and reduce mental fatigue … When one sleeps, the brain reorganizes and recharges itself, and removes toxic waste byproducts which have accumulated throughout the day. This evidence demonstrates that sleeping can clear the brain and help maintain its normal functioning.

Sleep is the best immune booster: Rest improves your ability to fight off infections

During your sleep, the body creates and releases proteins known as cytokines, which fight infections and inflammation.

A 2015 study published in the journal Sleep found that a lack of sleep was linked to a greater risk of getting cold after subjects were intentionally exposed to the cold virus.

You need to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep or take short naps during the day.  You can take two naps of 30 minutes each or less, one during the morning and one in the afternoon. Adequate sleep can reduce stress and strengthen the immune system, according to studies.

Reishi Promotes Sleep

Reishi is widely knowns for its sleep boosting abilities. These mushrooms have been traditionally used by Chinese and Japanese herbalists as a treatment for insomnia. Reishi mushroom is used to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress, resolve fatigue, and improve sleep. All you need is one teaspoon a day!
