The body produces lesser elastin and collagen as you age, which are proteins that let the skin be more flexible and plump. When you reach the age of 65 and up, you might experience some skin concerns, such as dryness, itchiness, irritation, slow healing of wounds, and thinness. The skin becomes more sensitive, so you need proper care to help improve its condition, thus making you look and feel a lot better.

Improve Bathing Habits

Go for warm water instead of hot water when bathing or showering. Hot water can make the skin dryer because it removes its natural oil. Also, keep your bath or shower time shorter. A 10-minute or quicker one would do, as long exposure to water can contribute to your skin’s loss of moisture. Moreover, ditch the bath brush and buff puff as they irritate the skin. Instead, choose a soft cloth as it’s gentler.

Use the Right Skincare Products

Skincare products for the third age are made from gentle ingredients as the skin of older adults is more sensitive. These products include lotion, cleansing foam, and skin barrier cream. There are also cleansing wipes that are ideal for this age group. These wipes are mild for the skin with ingredients that maintain the natural pH level and soothe irritation. Also, avoid fragrance products, as this can irritate the skin.

Don’t Skip Sun Protection

Protecting your skin from the sun is something that everyone should do, whether young or third age. Some older adults skip sun protection, thinking they already have dry skin, wrinkles, and dark spots. However, having this in your routine is vital as it can stop these skin problems from aggravating and prevent skin cancer. Avoid going out from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, as the sun’s UV is the strongest. Wear sunglasses, a hat, pants, and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from its rays. Of course, don’t forget to use sunscreen and reapply as needed for a maximum shield against the sun.

Invest in a Humidifier

Your air conditioner and heating system can make the air indoors dry, thus also drying your skin. The ideal humidity level is from 45% to 60%. If it gets lower than that, you need to increase air moisture to prevent skin dryness and other problems it may bring, like sore throat and asthma. Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity level in your home, so you would know when to use the humidifier. There’s no need to turn the humidifier on if the humidity level is within the recommended range.

Use Gloves

Protect your hands with gloves, whether gardening or doing some household chores. Dirt and chemicals from your products could easily cause skin problems, and you can avoid this by using gloves.

Stop Smoking

Smoking narrows blood vessels, affecting blood flow and preventing the skin from getting its needed nutrients and oxygen. So stop smoking not only for your skin but for your overall health.

Take extra care of your skin because it will make a huge difference in your comfort and confidence.
