Will consuming fermented foods lower your heart disease risk
(NaturalHealth365) Thousands of years before refrigerators, herders noticed something odd about the milk they carried in warm containers. Instead of spoiling, the milk turned thick and tangy and lasted for days, thanks to friendly bacteria.
From that happy accident came yogurt, cheese, and cultured milks that fed whole civilizations. Now, a study of more than 37,000 American adults suggests these ancient foods may still help protect the heart. Better still, the amount linked to the benefit was smaller than most people would guess.
Ten years of data from tens of thousands of Americans
For the study, published in Scientific Reports in September 2026, researchers turned to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The long-running national survey tracks the diets and health of a broad cross-section of Americans. In total, the team examined 37,366 adults who reported everything they ate over one or two full days.
The researchers then followed those adults for a median of about nine and a half years. Over that time, they compared people who ate fermented dairy with those who didn’t. Fermented dairy includes foods like yogurt, cheese, buttermilk, and sour cream, which friendly bacteria help transform during production.
Fewer deaths from heart disease and from any cause
People who ate fermented dairy had an 18% lower risk of dying from any cause during the study. Additionally, their risk of dying from heart disease was 20% lower than among people who ate none. Those results held after the researchers adjusted for age, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, income, and existing health conditions.
In plain numbers, about 13% of fermented dairy eaters died during follow-up, compared with 18% of non-eaters. Meanwhile, heart-related deaths dropped from about 6% to about 4%.
Why more did not mean better
Interestingly, the benefit did not keep climbing with bigger portions. The lower risk appeared at modest amounts and faded after people ate more than about 150 grams a day. That’s roughly two-thirds of a cup of yogurt.
In fact, the typical fermented dairy eater in the study ate only about 28 grams a day, close to a single slice of cheese. Researchers suspect several fermentation-related effects may help explain the benefit. These include protein fragments that support healthy blood pressure, friendly bacteria that strengthen the gut lining, and compounds that calm inflammation.
Simple ways to bring fermented foods back to your table
Choose plain organic yogurt and add your own sweetness. Flavored yogurts often contain as much added sugar as a dessert, which works against your heart. Instead, start with plain organic yogurt and stir in fresh berries, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a small drizzle of raw honey. Look for the words “live and active cultures” on the label to make sure the friendly bacteria survived processing.
Try organic kefir, a tangy fermented milk drink. Kefir often contains a wider variety of bacteria and yeasts than yogurt does. Pour a small glass alongside breakfast, or blend kefir into a smoothie with spinach and frozen fruit. Because the study found benefits at modest amounts, start with a few ounces a day.
If dairy does not agree with you, rotate in fermented vegetables. Sauerkraut, kimchi, and naturally fermented pickles also deliver friendly bacteria to the gut. Choose refrigerated versions, since shelf-stable jars are usually pasteurized, which kills the live cultures. A forkful or two with dinner adds flavor and supports gut health.
Feed your friendly bacteria with fiber. Live cultures thrive on plenty of fuel. Onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats, and beans all provide the fiber that helps beneficial bacteria flourish. Together, fermented foods and fiber-rich plants give your gut a powerful one-two combination.
A heart-healthy habit hiding in your refrigerator
Dairy has spent decades on the list of foods heart patients are told to fear. Yet in this study, a small bowl of yogurt or a slice of cheese was associated with fewer deaths, not more. Fermentation, one of the oldest food traditions on earth, may still have plenty to teach us about living longer.
