Orthopedic Surgeon Discusses Common Football Injuries

Lufkin, TX – For Immediate Release – When football injuries occur in young high school and college age athletes, it can be devastating to think that their football career could be over instantly. However, with proper care immediately after an injury and quick access to an orthopedic specialist, proper healing can begin quickly to minimize the damage.

Direct Orthopedic Care (DOC) physician Dr. Merritt Pember says, “Many football injuries such as ankle sprains can be avoided on the field with proper warm-ups beforehand. When common orthopedic injuries do occur on the football field however, there are steps you can take to reduce your time on the sidelines.”

Dr. Pember says he treats many football injuries including ACL tears and meniscus tears as well as tendonitis from injuries left untreated. He mentions that typically the best thing you can do is to put ice on an injury to reduce swelling and alleviate any pressure on the affected foot, leg, knee, or other affected body part immediately following your injury. The next step is to see an orthopedic specialist.

“Going directly to an orthopedic specialist in lieu of an emergency room or urgent care center allows you to receive care when it is most critical. There is a direct correlation with the length of time before treatment is received and patient outcomes. With orthopedic injuries, the sooner you seek care, the more likely you are to experience a full recovery and return to your pre-injury state,” states Dr. Pember.

Direct orthopedic centers allow patients access to specialists when traditional offices are closed, leaving only emergency rooms and urgent care open. Since ER physicians offer minimal orthopedic treatments and refer patients to a specialist anyway, time and money can be saved with immediate orthopedic care.
