So-Called Healthy Foods That One Should Avoid

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

We all come across a lot of labels that misguide us from the truth. They usually point out the things or benefits in a food we are looking for. Fat-free, All-Organic, Vitamin-enriched, All-Natural which is not they actually are 100% of the times. All of such products that market themselves to be good are never exactly good for you. In the recent years, the food industry has been given a lot of freedom to highlight very little benefits their products serve for the sake of marketing and promotion. It’s entirely up to the buyer to differentiate the good out of the bad.

This also means that we should look for all the ingredients that a product contains. You will be amazed by all the things you will come across in the products that you trust without blinking an eye. To begin with, most of the healthy bars might contain proteins or a little amount of vitamins but they contain a huge amount of unhealthy salts and sugars. Another misconception that people usually have that everything that is seasoned with sea salt has to be healthy and good for you. Denise Cole, professional dietitian claims from the Cleveland Clinic claims that “It’s going to have the same amount of sodium as table salt, we need less of it to make our food taste better because it’s a coarser grind than table salt, so just remember we’re still getting the same amount of sodium, it’s just in a different form.”

Another such misguiding marketing scheme is used for those low-fat peanut butter spread that we all are very eager to grab. In most of the cases, all of the healthy peanut fat is removed from such products and is replaced by artificial sugar which gives us the flavor that we want. This does not just happen with the low-fat peanut butter but a lot of other fat-free and low-fat products are also manufactured this way.

We don’t always get to see nutrition labels that could lead us to the healthiest food options that we are looking for during our market trips. And if you are looking to buy some green, make sure that you’re following the colors. Cole explains that, “Iceberg lettuce actually has very little nutritional value. It’s mostly water, so if you’re looking to get good vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, you want to look at darker, greener lettuces, like romaine and spinach and kale, the darker a lettuce, the more nutrition it has.”
