Texas Watchdog's Mark Lisheron honored for his reporting on stimulus problems throughout Texas

Texas Watchdog’s Austin bureau chief Mark Lisheron was among the Texas journalists honored by the Fort Worth Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists last weekend.

Lisheron took home the award for best online project at Fort Worth’s annual First Amendment Awards for his extensive series of reports on problems with federal stimulus spending in Texas

Our Steve Miller was also a finalist in that category for his reports on mail-in voter fraud in South Texas.

Other Houston-area winners taking home trophies were Chris Vogel and Craig Malisow of the Houston Press. Vogel won in the “Green News” category, and Malisow won in the “Opening the Books” category on open government.

Fort Worth’s annual Open Doors Award went to our friends at The Texas Tribune for their work in publishing online many government records in Texas. (Full disclosure: I was honored to receive the Open Doors Award myself in 2009.)

But the biggest winner of the night was Kathy Cruz of the Hood County News in Granbury, Texas, who took home five trophies in the categories for newspapers with small circulations: Defending the Disadvantaged, General News, Reporting on Open Government, Investigative and Opinion or Commentary. She looked like she needed a wheelbarrow to haul all of those trophies out of the banquet.

Congratulations!
