"Patriot" Act Passes the Senate

By a vote of 72-23, the Senate voted to extend three provisions of the so-called “Patriot” Act. Shortly before the final vote, Senator Paul’s two amendments were “tabled” (fancy Senate talk for not voting on – and effectively killing – legislation). You can see the roll call for his Firearms amendment here and his language to limit suspicious activity reporting requirements to requests from law enforcement agencies here. As of this writing, the House is set to vote soon. (You can find your representative’s contact information here to urge them to oppose the extension.)
Although we didn’t win the final vote, we made incredible progress by increasing the opposition from just 8 earlier this week (Mike Lee would have voted against but couldn’t make it due to weather) to 23. And we’ve grown leaps and bounds from a few years ago, when Congress was able to pass this kind of legislation without much fuss.
We generated thousands of calls to the Hill from across the country and forced our representatives on to the record, where we can hold them accountable for their actions. And we sent a clear message that the movement to return to the Constitution is stronger than ever.
