CEI on Potential Auto Tariff: "Trump Tax" Is Deeply Troubling
This week, the Trump administration launched a probe to consider imposing tariffs on imported automobiles. CEI Senior Fellow Marc Scribner warned such a “Trump tax” would be bad for consumers and trade.
“The recent announcement from President Trump and Commerce Secretary Ross regarding the investigation into automobile and auto part imports under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act is deeply troubling,” said Scribner. “If the president were to take action, not only would American consumers and businesses suffer from a new ‘Trump tax’ on cars that would do nothing to enhance American security, but this clear abuse of national security trade safeguards would threaten the credibility of the multilateral global trading system.”
