Resuming ICE Traffic Stops Will Put Agents and the Public at Risk, Cato Expert Says
Following two fatal ICE shootings of motorists in Maine and Texas, ICE briefly suspended most vehicle stops to retrain its agents before President Trump ordered the agency to resume them. I wanted to share new commentary from the Cato Institute’s David Bier arguing that permanently ending the stops would better protect ICE personnel, their targets, and the public without undermining enforcement.

Bier points to White House border czar Tom Homan’s acknowledgment that agents can arrest targets before they enter a vehicle or wait until they reach their destination. He argues that ICE’s increasingly opportunistic approach to arrests has produced dangerous and chaotic encounters without providing a meaningful enforcement benefit.
As Bier writes, “ICE has been endangering its officers and others for no enforcement benefit. Ending vehicle stops won’t end all the problems, or even all the deaths. But continuing them means more danger for ICE personnel and the public.”
