It’s Official – PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Becomes Most Liked Video Of All Time On YouTube

PSY is not only a YouTube star and the creator of a viral video hit, he’s also now a world record holder. And all for singing strange lyrics and dancing in the Gangnam Style. Whatever that is.
Gangnam Style
You’ve probably heard of ‘Gangnam Style‘ by now, even if it’s just the term rather than the song itself which has entered your sphere of knowledge. The term has come to mean the style of dance exhibiting in the video, which has taken off as a meme on the InterWebs.
As for the song, well, that’s currently making waves around the world, despite the fact it’s by a South Korean artist called PSY, and features lyrics mostly sung in Korean. And it’s now broken the world record for the number of likes received on YouTube.
World Record Likes
In a press release, Guinness World Records Community Manager Dan Barrett said:
“Having been the ‘Have you seen this?!’ video of the last two months across the web, it’s great to be able to award a record for this tremendously popular video. In years past it was unthinkable that something would be viewed a hundred million times, and now ‘Gangnam Style’ has achieved more than twice this figure in just three months on YouTube. As well as the record number of likes Gangnam Style has received, it can also boast 227 million views. And that is just on the original video, not the numerous tributes that have cropped up across the Google-owned video site.
The only problem with this declaration of greatness is it may be short-lived. No one could have predicted LMFAO would be knocked off the top spot by a Korean artist, but it happened. And it’ll happen again in the future, with another viral video star taking over from PSY.
Conclusions
PSY has managed to prove a couple of things with Gangnam Style: 1. That the Web will adopt anyone and anything, no matter where it’s from, as long as it’s good. 2. That YouTube can make or break people’s careers… without it PSY would be unknown outside of Korea.
