Last week at a private function, my wife reminded a roomful of donors about a great movie, Pay It Forward, and how the theme of selfless giving to strangers can change people’s lives for the better. In the movie, a young boy is given a social studies assignment: come up with a plan to change the world. Random acts of kindness filled every corner of this movie, even in the end when the young boy died.
As a society that’s been forced into chaos and socialism, bordering on fascism, we have moved away from any semblance of the age-old close-knit community that now exists only in books and the utopian minds of 12 year olds. Are we becoming more and more selfish?
So when I read academic papers that support what we already know, that random acts of kindness can bring positive change to people’s lives, it gives me further hope for humanity. One particular paper, Cooperative Behavior Cascades in Human Social Networks, by Dr. James H. Fowler and Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis, describes controlled experiments in which subjects had the opportunity to give away a portion or all of their money to strangers, or keep it for themselves.
