Barney Frank Braces for Unusually Tense Election Night — NY Times
The groundwork has been laid, the calls have been made and now it is up to each resident in the 4th district of Massachusetts to get out and vote. Sean Bielat has run one of the more improbable campaigns of the elections season and there is a real chance he pulls of the campaign upset of 2010. Even Barney Frank knows he is in trouble:
Representative Barney Frank, who barely had to raise a finger in past re-election efforts, is fending off a surprisingly strong challenge from a political newcomer who has benefited from a surge of out-of-state donations in the campaign’s final weeks.The Republican challenger, Sean Bielat, has been a frequent guest on national conservative radio and television shows, which has helped him raise more than $1 million in his quest to end Mr. Frank’s long political career. That has allowed Mr. Bielat’s spending to rival that of Mr. Frank, who took the unusual step of putting $200,000 of his own money into his campaign last month.
Knocking off a 30-year incumbent in one of the nation’s worst gerrymandered districts is potentially a bridge too far. However, it is very telling that on the night before the election, even Barney’s own campaign is still unsure of its chances:
Mr. Frank will be at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newton on Tuesday night, but he is not going so far as to call it a victory party. The schedule released by his campaign Monday refers to it as an “election night event.”
No matter the outcome, Sean Bielat’s campaign has been one of the top stories in the nation this election season. If we go to a recount or contested election, we’ll keep the Oust Barney site up for anyone willing to help the cause.
