Haley Opposes Amazon Tax Break, But Will Not Veto
A bipartisan group of S.C. House lawmakers have introduced a bill proposing a constitutional amendment stripping the governor’s ability to allow bills to become law without a signature.
The bill – dubbed the “Veto Transparency Act” – would require the governor to sign or veto a bill within 15 days of its passage or the bill will be vetoed without comment. Currently, a bill becomes law if the governor does not sign the bill after five days.
The bill is relevant to the current debate over whether the Legislature will approve a sales tax break for an Amazon.com facility to be located in Lexington County. Gov. Nikki Haley has said she does not support the tax break, but that she will allow the bill to become law without saying if she will sign the bill.
Oh, come on! That’s a cop out! If you don’t approve of the tax break then veto the damn thing. Enough of this crony capitalism already. Why does Amazon deserve a lower tax rate than any other business in this state?
I absolutely support this Constitutional amendment. The governor, who ever it is, should have to take a solid position on every bill passed by the legislature. It shouldn’t be a mystery.
