Imagine…No Liberals
This has just got to stick in the throat of all liberals – from the Toronto Sun:
John Lennon felt a little embarrassed by his former radicalism, according to his last personal assistant.
Fred Seaman worked alongside the music legend from 1979 to Lennon’s death at the end of 1980 and he reveals the former Beatle was a Ronald Reagan fan who enjoyed arguing with left-wing radicals who reminded him of his former self.
In new documentary Beatles Stories, Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn’t the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.
He says, “John, basically, made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on (Democrat) Jimmy Carter…
I wouldn’t read too much in to this – pretty much everyone was sour on Jimmy Carter by late 1979 or so. Also, as Lennon aged he might have reflected a bit on just what had happened; maturity does develope and the view of 20 are heavily modified by 40, if you have any sense at all. The problem with all too many liberals is that their views don’t modify…we’ve got people in their 60′s these days still holding fast to the opinions of 1971, which were clearly wrong even as early as 1979. Perhaps Lennon was just tired of dealing with such people; can you imagine what it must have been like to endlessly deal with people holding the infantile notions year after year? Maybe he sat down and thought about things and even if he wasn’t about to become a delegate to the 1984 Republican convention he was at least willing to revise opinions in light of the facts?
We’ll never know, of course. But it ads a new wrinkle to the Lennon story and, once again, makes his early and untimely death tragic.
