Should South Carolina Allow Recall Elections?
S.C. Democrats say they will use the state grand jury investigation of Lt. Gov. Ken Ard’s ethics violations to push for a constitutional amendment to allow voters to recall statewide elected officials.
Democrats and Republicans have proposed recall legislation before, unsuccessfully. But that was before South Carolina’s attorney general referred Ard’s case to the state grand jury, a first for a state constitutional officer.
And this time Democrats have the support of Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican.
“Anything that empowers the voters, I’m always going to support,” said Haley, speaking to reporters after announcing a $14 million business investment in Bamberg County. “At the end of the day, it’s the people we want to be satisfied with who they had.”
I support the option of South Carolina having recall elections, but there needs to be some restrictions on them. What I don’t what is for us to turn into Wisconsin and start recalling legislators around the state simply because we don’t like the way they vote on a certain legislative bill. There should be a requirement that some sort of ethics violation be involved in order for an elected representative to be recalled from office.
