North Korea Threatens South Korea’s “Final Destruction”

Oh the irony.

At a United Nations Conference on “Disarmament” Tuesday, North Korean diplomat Jon Yong Ryong defiantly proclaimed that if the US takes action against his nation (in response to the rogue regime’s latest nuclear test), it will be forced to take “second and third steps in succession” – steps that could ultimately lead to South Korea’s “final destruction.”

Bogged down in a sequestration battle in Washington, I would not expect an immediate reaction from the White House and/or key lawmakers.  If recent history is any indication of the coming response, I’d anticipate a vaguely worded statement from the State Department and little more.  Republican lawmakers seem to believe Iran is the only legitimate nuclear threat to our national interests; and Democrats seem to be taking the position that there are no legitimate nuclear threats to our national interests.  What that spells my friends is a big ole dose of wishful thinking.

Do I believe North Korea desires to take steps toward South Korea’s “final destruction?”  Absolutely.  Do I believe they will take those steps?  Absolutely not.  The repercussions of that kind of action would be too great.  While China may, at some point, pull the strings on its puppet North Korean regime to trigger a regional or global conflict, I do not believe that day is yet upon us.  And considering this administration’s response to yet another nuclear test by the North Koreans is likely to be little more than a strongly worded statement or call for UN sanctions and/or closer monitoring, I’d expect the North Korean backlash to be something noticeably short of Jon Yong Ryong’s threatened second and third steps.
