Six Days From Today

Dear Marriage Supporter — In six days, we will launch a major nationwide educational campaign concerning one of the most important cases ever involving the religious liberty rights of people of faith. This case, Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission is currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. Briefing in the case is complete and NOM filed an important legal brief in support of the right of Christian bakers like Jack Phillips to refuse to participate in celebrating a gay ‘wedding’ if doing so violates his religious beliefs. Oral argument is set for December 5th.

We are still about $875 short of the bare minimum we need to put the final touches on our effort to educate Americans about the importance of this legal case.

I realize that most people are focused this week on spending time with their family over Thanksgiving, something I am looking forward to as well. But we cannot ignore the enormous implications of the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. Let me tell you just a little bit about this case.

Jack Phillips owns Masterpiece Cakeshop. He’s a devout Christian who believes that marriage is the union of one man and one woman as the bible teaches. When he was asked to design and produce a custom cake for a gay ‘wedding,’ Jack politely declined, citing his Christian faith. The gay couple then filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which ruled that he was guilty of “discrimination.” They imposed a fine, ordered him to start celebrating gay ‘weddings’ or stop celebrating any wedding, and ordered him to undergo a reeducation program, including filing quarterly compliance reports.

Now get this: a Christian man went to a gay baker in Colorado and asked him to create a cake with a message that expressed opposition to gay ‘marriage.’ The gay baker refused to create such a cake, citing his beliefs. A complaint was filed with this same Colorado Civil Rights Commission, but this time the Commission ruled that the gay baker did not have to create a cake that violated his beliefs!

Have you ever seen such politically-correct hypocrisy? This must be stopped, and that’s what the US Supreme Court can do with the proper ruling in support of Jack Phillips.
