Bowe Bergdahl Contests Dishonorable Discharge

Now for the latest installment of the Bowe Bergdahl saga:

Bowe Bergdahl was sentenced in November by Army Judge Col. Jeffery R. Nance to a reduction in rank – from sergeant to private – a $10,000 fine and a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Army.

U.S. Army General Robert B. “Abe” Abrams reviewed and approved the sentence Tuesday.

The sentence is unjustly lenient, when you consider that Bergdahl is a deserter at best and very possibly a willing traitor whose intention was to defect to the enemy in Afghanistan. We know he got American troops killed; we just don’t know whether he did it on purpose. And yet:

Bergdahl had already accepted the terms of his sentence, allowing him to avoid prison time, but he is appealing the dishonorable discharge. The case will now be forwarded to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals at Fort Belvoir, Va.

If only they would overturn the whole sentence in favor of the richly deserved traditional punishment for desertion: execution by firing squad.

Treasonous behavior goes underpunished if not completely unpunished quite often these days. Obama’s unlawful trade of five top terrorists for Bergdahl comes to mind.
