One Problem with Free Range Chickens

Moonbats attempting to drive up the price of meat so that we will stop eating it demand free range chickens. This creates a bonanza for eagles. As Audubon reported from the Georgia farm White Oak Pastures in 2016:

The slaughter here is relentless. White Oak is home to one of the largest pastured chicken flocks in the country; at any given time, 60,000 birds wander the land in accordance with pasture-raised parameters. As the next level beyond free-range, this farm never contains its adult birds indoors, instead allowing them to roam without restraint at all times. This also means that for the Bald Eagles that showed up a few years ago, White Oak is an all-you-can-eat buffet.

When I visited in January, at least 75 Bald Eagles were living on the farm, where they overwinter October to March. At that time, Harris estimated each raptor was killing up to four chickens a day, racking up a total of at least $1,000 in daily losses.

Eagles are federally protected. All the farmers can do is watch them chow down on the chickens. The increasingly numerous eagles escalated to killing turkeys and even young goats.

The inevitable unintended consequences of moonbattery are good for a laugh — unless you are one of the victims. Good thing we aren’t chickens.

Unfortunately, some of us farm them, and plenty more eat them. Humane Watch provides an update:

As of September, White Oak Pastures estimated that bald eagles have destroyed nearly 160,000 chickens, which translates to $2,200,000 in losses. According to White Oak, 160,000 chickens is a whopping 30 percent of the farm’s chickens.

Taxpayers are in for a hit too:

White Oak Pastures realized these losses were unsustainable and appealed to the Farm Service Administration of the USDA, asking for compensation. For some reason, the FSA agreed.

FSA bureauweenies might have told White Oak that if they don’t want eagles eating their chickens, they ought to keep them indoors for their own safety. But moonbattery thoroughly saturates government agencies.

Already outfits like the Human Society try to bully restaurants and grocers into offering only meat meeting the requirements of the Global Animal Partnership. If liberals acquire the political leverage, they will undoubtedly impose such standards at the federal level. In utopia, all chickens will be free range — until eagles or other predators eat them.

Then the eagles will have to go back to living off what they can catch in the wild, after being used to having their meals practically served to them. Many will starve. Yet again we see that in the end, moonbattery doesn’t benefit anyone.
