Portugal to Pay 3 Million Euros for New Mosque in Lisbon

The government of  Portugal is spending 3 million euros of the taxpayers’ money toward the construction of a new mosque in downtown Lisbon. A lot of people are unhappy about it. What’s worse, the defenders of the project including the government and those ubiquitous fact-checkers are refuting charges that the government is spending 3 million euros for the construction of a mosque. Part of the 3 million euros is for expropriating the land from residents who live in buildings which are to be demolished.

Note: In paragraph 4……”One of the ways to feed fanaticism, aside from being in the same space, is the construction of religious symbols and temples……that are already being demolished in various countries of Europe.“  This must refer to Christian churches that are being demolished in Europe. I am assuming that the …… space contains some information that makes this clear. The countries cited are hardly demolishing mosques.

(Prime Minister) Antonio Costa, still in the Lisbon Chamber, donated 3 million (Euros) to construct a mosque at Mouraria, but the dictatorship of lies and of the fact-checkers say that is false because the 3 million were not just for the mosque, but also to expropriate (the property) from the people who live on the land which the Chamber wants to offer to the Muslim community.

It is, adds the office of Manuel Salgado, “the relocation of installations already in existence where other aspects are added for the respective social integration of this community in a zone whose history goes back to the maintenance of the Islamic presence in the city after the Christian Reconquest.”

To construct the new mosque, at a time when Lisbon is pointed out as an example of religious tolerance, a protocol was signed between the municipality and the Islamic Center of Bangladesh, Baitul Mukarram Mosque, on 31 January 2013, to agree on the terms in which it will be installed.  The preliminary architectural study of  Mouraria Square, done by architect Ines Lobo, was approved unanimously in a Chamber meeting on 25 January 2012.
