Liberal Clothes Designer Learns That Liberals Hate The American Flag

She seemed to be doing this for the wrong reasons, and learned a valuable lesson about her Comrades

A designer tried to reclaim the American flag. Her liberal followers revolted.

Kimberley Gordon designs dreamy, feminine, size-inclusive dresses for her brand, Selkie. It’s winking, upscale whimsy — the kind of gown a woman might wear to twirl in a field of wildflowers, or feel like a princess.

And for her latest line, Gordon took inspiration from America’s semiquincentennial, generally, and its flag, specifically. There are red, white and blue corsets, star-print lace-trim slip dresses, faded flag-striped bloomers and empire-waist maxi dresses.

The rollout did not go as planned.

“It was getting a lot of love,” she says, “and then it suddenly started getting a lot of hate. Like a lot of hate.”

Surprise?

“This just looks like a bizarre colonial/antebellum fantasy,” one commenter posted on Selkie’s Instagram.

“The American flag is a symbol of racism, homophobia and capitalism,” added another.

How could the company “put out a patriotic line during a time when patriotism is impossible to untangle from fascism?” asked Diet Prada, a fashion social media account.

What made Gordon think her customers, who were all about Leftistm because her clothing was all about leftism, would be the type of people who were patriotic and like American flag colors?

“When I thought about the flag and how it was off limits all of a sudden because of the country being divided, I felt really frustrated,” she says. She wanted Americans on the left — much of her client base — to feel like they could wear the flag, too. They are, after all, every bit as American as those on the right.

Gordon introduced the line with images of suffragists and a photo shoot that showed the clothing on models who are immigrants, some plus-size, one of whom is a wheelchair user.

“We refuse to surrender the symbols of this country to those who would use them against us,” Selkie’s marketing declared.

But when Jade Stevenson, a Black writer who specializes in alternative fashion, saw the collection, she felt confused and disappointed. The brand’s suffragette posts didn’t acknowledge how that historical movement centered White women, many of whom were racist. The silhouettes of the gowns felt nostalgic in an antebellum way, rather than a radical way.

“I’m not seeing what America looks like to me,” Stevenson told The Washington Post. Despite knowing Gordon’s stated goals for the line, “at the end of the day, the flag does so much damage, not only historically, but even in present day. So it’s kind of weird to want to reclaim it.”

How often do you see a Democrat voter wearing the American flag, even if it is just a pin? Especially when a Republican is in office? Heck, they aren’t too happy with it when a Dem is in office.

And with the proliferation of flag merch in stores lately, some influencers and podcasters have been grappling with what it means to wear the flag, too. Content creator Hannah Brown posted an Instagram reel of herself showing off a red and white gingham romper with the caption “If you see me celebrating America’s 250th birthday, just know I mean it in a free public libraries, abortion is healthcare, separation of church and state … kind of way.” Influencer Katie Wood’s post about “4th of July outfits for liberal baddies” included a blue baseball cap with the embroidered phrase “Make lying wrong again.”

If the Washington Post wanted to make Democrats not look pure moonbat, they’re doing a bad job at it, but, come on, the article itself is written for Democrats only. And really shows how much Liberals hate the U.S.

Also, maybe she shouldn’t have overdone the clothing line? I’m way, way far from a fashion expert, but, seems a bit too much.
