Abdul El-Sayed’s father, Eastern Michigan University professor Mohammed El-Sayed, sits on the board of Life for Relief and Development — displayed on the charity’s own website, with the affiliation in federal tax forms since at least 2020.

“Mohammad El-Sayed’s charity was tangled up for years in federal investigations over sending money to Iraq up until days before the US invasion.” The charity paid Office of Foreign Assets Control a $780,000 settlement. OFAC: “appears to have willfully violated U.S. economic sanctions regulations; prior to the relevant transactions, LRD had written notice from OFAC that such transfers were prohibited and that OFAC did not authorize such transactions; LRD’s highest management levels—i.e., its President—knew of the conduct giving rise to the apparent violations and directed the funds transfers to Iraq via Jordan.” (Washington Free Beacon).
The FBI raided the charity’s office in 2006; the U.S. military raided its Baghdad office in 2004; its PR coordinator pleaded guilty to acting as an unregistered agent of Saddam’s government. Its CEO, Hany Saqr, appears in the 1992 directory of U.S. Muslim Brotherhood leaders used in the Holy Land Foundation trial, and in 2018 called Egypt’s president a dog of the Jews. All this, and El-Sayed still claims his family has no connections to the Muslim Brotherhood or Islamic extremists.
