The Curse of Cursing

What’s so important about maintaining a standard of, well, anything?

It’s sad, really. Over the past months I’ve noticed a steady decline in simple, basic politeness. It started slowly and is now to the point where it’s basically a daily event. Even worse, my favorite web news site, beforeitsnews, is not enforcing their own rule about it. I suspect they’re at a loss as to how to stop it. Or whether they should even bother.

Does it really matter? Of course it does. Everything matters in one way or another.

There are many great articles on the website and the internet about “enlightenment”, “awakening”, “spiritual transformation” and so on. Yet for some reason a most basic standard of respect-namely not using the Creator’s name in vain- is violated in a lot of those same articles. Sounds a bit hypocritical, doesn’t it? Why should I believe what is written by someone concerning a spiritual matter, when they can’t seem to get their point across without cursing the name of the very Creator they claim to be writing about?

More to the point: Is that all we thing the First Amendment is worth? To spew filth at every opportunity? Do we think that this verbal filth somehow elevates our status in the world? Makes us appear smarter? More “intellectual”? Friend, it does just the opposite. It detracts, lowers, pollutes our society, our minds, and it betrays the innocence of our children, our precious little ones. I am including all manner of cursing, not just the Creator’s name.

The filth that comes out of people in their comments and replies also shows the level of immaturity they are at in their spiritual journey. I’d be willing to bet that a lot of them never speak such filth around their parents or siblings. Yet here they are, behaving so badly that if I knew them I might not even allow them into my home, or around my young children (who are now grown). It’s not harmless, and it is not acceptable behavior.

Aren’t we supposed to be trying to reach a higher goal? To set a higher standard? It will not happen if the mind is wallowing in filthy language on the inside. The Holy Scriptures plainly state that the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart. Whether you want to admit it or not, using filth as a means of communication shows a serious character flaw. You aren’t in control of yourself, and your emotions. You have been “taught” that it is “normal”. It is not. The spiritual consequence of it is negative, not positive.

“Everybody” loses it once in a while, myself included. This is something that I am not proud of, and I have made much progress in overcoming this aspect of myself. But the truth is, I have been able to overcome this not just by sheer force of will at the language problem itself, but by studying many sources of writings to improve my understanding of spiritual things. In other words, the cursing simply goes away when it is replaced by truth and understanding and most important of all, Love.

It hasn’t been easy, not at all. This is one of the dead giveaways concerning the importance of it. If it weren’t important, it wouldn’t be a big deal to change. You will find that this will be a difficult fight. Understand that this is a direct reflection of the negative force that is present in your life. 

I am asking you to stop using filthy language in every aspect of your life. Let the filth of cursing be associated only with the lowest forms of life, not the highest. Let it be the identifier of those who are wallowing in a pit of ignorance, perhaps never to find their way out. Do not allow yourself to sink to the level of what cursing represents. Up until now, perhaps you’ve never considered it to be of importance. I can assure you it is. It is an important aspect of your true self. Do you like what you see?
