If there’s one thing that most people can agree on, it’s that mornings can be rough. We do all kinds of things to wake ourselves up and get ready for the day. Some people will take a hot shower, take shots of espresso, or apply a caffeine patch. No matter what your routine is, we could all use some pointers on how to have a great start to your morning. Here are some of the best ways to kick off your day.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The best way to start off your morning is by being well-rested. There is nothing worse than waking up in a groggy, sleepy haze. Make sure you are getting a good night’s sleep by making time to get a full six to eight hours of rest every night. If you struggle to fall asleep, here are some tips and tricks to help you get to sleep faster:

  • Stay Off Your Phone: The blue light that emanates off our phones or tablets may be the cause of your restless nights. Try to stay off your phone right before trying to fall asleep if you want to get to sleep quicker.

  • Be in a Routine: Try to get to bed around the same time each night if you are able to. This way your body will start to get tired as you anticipate your bedtime each night, leading to a more timely rest.

  • Try Melatonin: If all else fails you can try to wind down by taking a melatonin supplement. Melatonin supplements come in pill, liquid, or gummy forms so try out one that works for you if you are really struggling to fall and stay asleep.

Don’t Hit Snooze

There are some studies that suggest that hitting snooze on your alarm for an extra 15 minutes of sleep can actually make you feel more tired and fatigued throughout the day. The best thing you can do to start off your morning right is to wake up when your alarm goes off. Set your alarm for the exact time that you need to be up by to prevent yourself from falling prey to the snooze button one too many times.

Don’t Be in a Rush

The worst way to start your morning is in a rush. When you set your alarm, make sure you have plenty of time to go through your morning routine at a leisurely pace. This will help you to feel less stressed in the mornings which will have a positive impact on your mood throughout the day.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

If you are a chronic breakfast skipper, this is your sign to try and get in a meal before the afternoon sets in. While many people struggle to eat first thing in the morning, this can actually be the cause of any mid-morning slumps in energy. Eating upon waking also helps to start your metabolism and can prevent you from overeating during the day. Some studies even show a correlation between eating breakfast and weight maintenance. There are also studies that suggest that eating breakfast can help prevent illnesses like heart disease and type two diabetes. So if you are looking to start your day off right, make sure you are eating a nutritious meal when you wake up.

Prepare the Night Before

If you have a busy day ahead of you, the mornings can often feel overwhelming and rushed. This will then set the tone for the rest of your day. If you want to set yourself up for success, you should prepare anything you need for the next day the night before. This can be things like laying out outfits, meal prepping, or making an itinerary or to-do list. This will help you feel more relaxed and at ease in the morning when you wake up already prepared to take on the day.

Take Vitamins

If you have a multivitamin or any specific supplements that you take daily, make sure you are taking these in the morning. It can be hard to remember to do this when you put it off till the afternoon or evening.
