POLK SALAD ANNIE SPECTRE
5/29/2024: Received a paranormal hotline call from Floyd Moreau, a self-proclaimed “swamp rat” from Louisiana. Floyd is an avid hunter and fisherman. There have been many times he hunted in the Atchafalaya Basin. The Atchafalaya Basin, or also known as the Atchafalaya Swamp is the largest wetland and swamp area in the United States. The swamp is located in south central Louisiana, it is a combination of wetlands and river delta area where the Atchafalaya River and the Gulf of Mexico converge. The river stretches from near Simmesport in the north through parts of eight parishes to the Morgan City southern area. Floyd tells me that this swamp is very dangerous. Floyd tells me that this swamp is haunted by ghosts, shadow people, man-eating alligators, Honey Island Swamp Monster and the Rougarou. Floyd said there is even a more dangerous supernatural creature in this swamp and it’s Polk Salad Annie. Floyd says that Polk Salad Annie is either a demon or a witch. Floyd had his first encounter with this creature while on a hunting trip in the swamp. Floyd says that he saw a woman in red floating around in the swamp. When the entity saw Floyd, she flew at him and scratched his bare chest. Floyd ran towards his truck as fast as he can. When he jumped into the truck the song Polk Salad Annie by Tony Joe White came on. Floyd looked in the back mirror and Polk Salad Annie was hot on his tail. Floyd eventually got away. It wasn’t over yet. Floyd became very ill. Floyd learned from his brother that Polk Salad Annie may have been a woman that was assaulted by a group of men in the swamp and then murdered. Polk Salad Annie now seeks her revenge against any men that venture into the swamp. I asked Floyd why he calls this entity Polk Salad Annie, and he tells me that is the song that came on when he was being pursued by this entity. Floyd feels he has an attachment after this incident. and I suggested to Floyd that he should get a full submersion baptism (a basic form of exorcism) to get rid of his attachment. Floyd will follow my instructions and will stay in contact with me. To see what song Floyd is talking about, go to this link and you will hear the song Polk Salad Annie by Tony Joe White: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCSsVvlj6YA

Let’s take a look at the other horrors of this swamp, a list of things that you could encounter if you venture in this spooky basin.

MISSING PEOPLE AND MURDER
People go missing in this swamp all the time. Case example: In 2020, a hunter named Johnny Deaux went missing in a portion of the swamp known for supernatural activities. Deaux had ventured into the Atchafalaya Basin in search of alligators but never returned. The search party could not find Johnny or any evidence that he was in this swamp. No backpack, no bottled water, no pieces of clothing, no gun. Nothing. It seems that Johnny simply vanished off the face of the Earth. Where did Johnny go? How can you simply vanish and leave no evidence that you were in this swamp? Besides missing people, you also have murders. A huge swamp like this is the perfect place to dump bodies. It’s also a great place to commit a secluded murder. Rumors have it that Mafia Crime Boss Carlos Marcello had certain people executed in this swamp. Marcello also used this swamp for a dumping area for dead bodies. A recent murder that happened in this swamp is when a missing pregnant Baton Rouge teacher was discovered in the swamp. On June 2016, a decomposed body was found near the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office worked to determine whether the body belonged to a missing pregnant teacher. The woman had been shot in the head and was pregnant at the time of her death. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, DNA analysis was needed for positive identification. Speculation arose that the deceased woman might be Lyntell Washington, who had been reported missing. She was seven months pregnant and had a 3-year-old daughter. Robert Marks, who had a romantic relationship with Washington, was arrested on charges of aggravated kidnapping and child desertion. Washington’s daughter told officers that Marks hurt her mother and put her in the lake. Missing people and murder are just one more reason not to venture into this swamp.

THE CHITIMACHA
The Chitimacha have an Indian reservation in St. Mary Parish near Charenton on Bayou Teche. Their reservation is a small part of their precontact territory. They are the only Louisiana tribe who still control some of their original land, where they have long occupied areas of the Atchafalaya Basin. Hunters make claim that they sometimes hear the chanting of Chitimacha spirits. A fisherman saw 6 Chitimacha spirits looking over the swamp while he was fishing. The fisherman believes the Chitimacha spirits protect the swamp.

ROUGAROU
The Rougarou is a Louisiana legend that tells of a human who has been cursed and transforms into a terrifying creature with the body of a man and the head of a wolf or dog. The curse is said to occur when a person breaks a Lenten vow, and it can only be lifted after 101 days. The legend may have originated from French settlers who migrated to Louisiana, blending their tales of werewolves and shapeshifters with local culture. Hunter Tyler Laurent claims he saw a gathering of 6 Rougarou by the swamp water, drinking water from the swamp. Two of the Rougarou looked at Tyler. The Rougarou made no attempt to go after him. Tyler was frozen in place and watched the Rougarou drink the water and simply run off into the swamp.

HONEY ISLAND SWAMP MONSTER
Also in this swamp, you have the Honey Island Swamp Monster. The Honey Island Swamp Monster, is also known as Louisiana’s “bigfoot of the swamp.” The Honey Island Swamp Monster is commonly described by alleged witnesses as a large, bipedal, humanoid, about 7 feet tall, covered with gray hair, having yellow or red eyes and accompanied by a putrid odor. Other local names for the creature include the Louisiana Wookiee, and The Thing. Alleged plaster casts of footprints said to be from the creature showcase four toes; not a natural trait found in primates, who possess five. Claims of its existence are generally not considered credible. Ecologist Paul Wagner, his wife Sue and their guide Robbie Charbonnet investigated the Honey Island Swamp Monster and found no evidence of its existence. The first claimed sighting was in 1963 by Harlan Ford, a retired air traffic controller who had taken up wildlife photography. After his death in 1980, a reel of Super 8 film showing the creature was found among his belongings. In 1974, Ford and his friend Billy Mills claimed to have found unusual footprints in the area, as well as the body of a wild boar whose throat had been gashed. Today, the creature is still purported to inhabit the swamp and the bayous along the Pearl River. Local lore tells of a train crash that occurred near the swamp in the early 20th century in which a traveling circus lost chimpanzees who adapted to the environment and offer a potential explanation as to the creature’s origins.

BIG BESSIE (ALLIGATOR)
The swamp is filled with alligators. The one alligator that is the most terrifying is Big Bessie. Big Bessie is said to be as large as the Stokes Alligator that was caught in Alabama in 2014. The Stokes Alligator was 15 feet in length and 1000 pounds. Big Bessie is said to be as large as the Stokes Alligator or maybe even larger. Hunters and fisherman say if you come across Big Bessie, the best thing you can do is RUN!
