There have been many reports of paranormal activity happening at the majestic Alhambra. While the Alhambra in Granada, Spain is not scientifically proven to be haunted, it is deeply wrapped in ghostly folklore, romantic legends, and eerie visitor tales. There have been centuries of royal tragedies, battles, and secret underground spaces, that have inspired countless spooky stories about the historic Moorish fortress. Visitors have mentioned that they have heard footsteps echoing through empty archways and dark corridors. Faint whispers and murmurs are heard in the vacant Hall of the Ambassadors. People have reported sudden drafts of freezing cold air in closed, windowless rooms. Fleeting shadows have been seen darting around and near the fortress towers before vanishing completely. One of the popular legends is about the Phantom Hand. Visitors and old tales claim a phantom hand occasionally brushes shoulders or grabs arms in specific rooms, the Phantom Hand is tied to tragic romantic fables of imprisoned princesses. One of the legends that fascinates me is the story of the Tribe of Elves. Folklore tells of mystical guardian spirits or Jinns are bound to the palace, watching over the ancient Islamic architecture. Locals and tourists make claim that they have seen little people or elves guarding the Alhambra. Real-life history includes dark political murders and wartime destruction, fueling the modern reputation of the grounds being spiritually restless.
Right out of the TV show Game of Thrones, you have the Royal Murder Room and the betrayal. During the 15th century, Sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali was led to believe that the rival Abencerrajes noble family was plotting a coup. Little did the noble family know they were being set-up for an execution. The Sultan invited 36 prominent male members of the family to a grand banquet at the palace. As each guest arrived, guards immediately dragged them to the central fountain and beheaded them one by one. There have been witnesses who claim they have seen ghosts that are without a head. Witnesses have also seen the Phantom Stain. The Phantom Stain is a reddish-brown rust oxidation stain that remains permanently embedded in the marble fountain bowl. Popular legend claims the stain is the indelible blood of the slaughtered nobles, and visitors still report hearing faint, agonizing groans echoing in the room.
The French Occupation occurred in 1810. Napoleon’s troops seized the fortress during the Peninsular War, turning the royal palace into military barracks and a hospital. The historic walls bore witness to the harsh realities of wartime executions, deaths from disease, and military suffering. This was known as The Execution Grounds. Upon retreating in 1812, French forces rigged the entire complex with explosives. A crippled Spanish soldier named José García successfully defused the explosives, saving the main palaces from being blown to pieces. The heavy military trauma left behind centuries of stories regarding phantom soldiers in 19th-century uniforms seen patrolling the outer watchtowers.
The Silos (Mazmorras) are beneath the Alhambra’s Alcazaba fortress. There lies a network of deep, bottle-shaped underground dungeons. Christian captives and political prisoners were lowered down by ropes into these dark, windowless stone pits, often left to perish. The intense suffering in these subterranean cavities has made the fortress foundations a hotspot for stories of unexplained cold spots and disembodied weeping, moaning and crying. Some witnesses even say that they hear screaming at times.
