Wisconsin Unions: Shrinking After Walker Eliminates Mandatory Dues

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Union dues are hefty things in good times and bad. Yes Unions use that money for great benefits-no question. Yet they are often much more costly  than need be. This is becuase Unions are like the Government, and their officers and insiders get more and more of the pie. The US is  littered with many Union office administratiors (nee Executives) that make over $150,000 per year. Some have cars, travel allowances etc. Also, an easy check of campaign expenditures shows hundreds of millions going to Democrats and lobbyists. The net effect is bloated Union fees that in many cases don’t even represent the Union Members interests (can you say” illegal alien/open borders” along with “laborers union”.

By eliminating the mandatory Union dues checkoff Scott Walker has let the union members speak-and they are speaking with their pocketbooks. See below from the Wall Street Journal:

Wisconsin membership in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees—the state’s second-largest public-sector union after the National Education Association, which represents teachers—fell to 28,745 in February from 62,818 in March 2011, according to a person who has viewed Afscme’s figures. A spokesman for Afscme declined to comment.

Much of that decline came from Afscme Council 24, which represents Wisconsin state workers, whose membership plunged by two-thirds to 7,100 from 22,300 last year.

A provision of the Walker law that eliminated automatic dues collection hurt union membership. When a public-sector contract expires the state now stops collecting dues from the affected workers’ paychecks unless they say they want the dues taken out.

One may now expect that the Unions will do the same thing they did to their Dues as they did to their School Insurance after it was bid out..LOWER IT TO A REAS0NABLE LEVEL!

Now that’s power to the people! Perhaps we will have a new support group. Ex Union Dues payors for Walker

Unions are already at a historic low, only representing 6.7% of Americans. They are not the problem, in fact, we have more problems now that they no longer have as much heft and influence as they used to have.

Unions represent the interests of the workers who are part of them. Now there is no organized resistance to big business buying out politicians and implementing whatever policies they decide. We have $1.8B in PAC money being spent by just Republicans this election season.

Unions raised wages for everyone, helping provide stable jobs to middle class americans. In fact, when union membership was highest, so was our productivity and our quality of life. Ever since the 80s, when Reagan effectively crushed the ability for citizens to unionize, wages, job security and quality of life have all deteriorated.

Its not popular with the Right, but its true. It bears out in the numbers. The best periods in American history are when we had a vibrant union movement, higher taxes on the wealthy, and practiced Keynesian economics. The worst periods in american history have been when supply side economics, union busting and unfettered defense spending were the norm. Anyone with a basic knowledge of American history in the 1900′s should know this. Unionizing is what kept America from becoming a truly Socialist nation after the bloom of the industrial revolution. Don’t believe me? Open a history book.

Unions are a worthless drain on our society. There was a time when they were needed. WAS. Now they’re no better than any ‘government’ organization. Huge, inefficient, and corrupt. Hopefully they keep declining.

Union membership starting declining with the Reagan Administration. Reagan busted unions all through his reign. He gave tax cuts and benefits to the rich and it was supposed to trickle down. Unions are often the only thing helping an individual take on a corporation when they have done wrong. Corporations do not care if the injure you, enslave you, or work you to death. There are ample examples showing corporations don’t care about the law or about people.

The point of this article is that probably 60% of Union membership is by force -not choice. These “ex” Union members will undoubtedly vote for Scott Walker Tuesday as they are sick of being soaked for Democrat Politicians and Union officials with big salaries and “union” cars.
As for the first comment-Keynesian economics is a joke and has never worked. No country has ever had Government Spending propel its people to prosperity. As a matter of fact we are seeing a Socialist Europe and Socialist Obama Administration proving the reverse right now!

Unions are money grubbing, power grabbing, communist liars and thieves.

I have no problem with private sector unions. If the majority of a companies workers want to vote one in, that is their right. The union represents the workers and bargain with the company management for salaries and perks. That is fine, it is the managements money to bargain with.

However, public sector unions are a travesty. Public sector workers are paid with OUR (taxpayers) money and we have NO seat that the bargaining table! Politicians and bureaucrats are bribed with campaign contributions to give the unions more of OUR money. It is not their money to bargain with and they don’t bargain anyway!

People are wise to this arrangement now. Public sector unions are going down, the taxpayer has had quite enough of this!

“Unions use that money for great benefits???”

As a Chevrolet dealer during the 60s and 70s, my father was saddled with the Teamsters and the Machinists unions. Every 2-3 years the Teamster’s pension fund was discovered to be mysteriously bankrupt! Members who had paid in for decades were just out of luck. Strangely enough, none of the union heads complained very loudly about the financial difficulties! Seems only they took advantage of the “great benefits.”

Funny, the union I was steward for on my job has union dues of 24 bucks a month, taken directly from our paychecks in two 12 dollar installments each month. And nobody was forced to join a union. In fact, if I recall, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled years that forced union membership is unconstitutional, therefore nobody can be forced to join a union.
