Rex Tillerson: US Troops Will Continue To Occupy Syria

So, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says we are going to occupy a sovereign nation which hasn’t attacked us, but which we have unilaterally attacked with 50 tomahawk missiles:

“WASHINGTON — American troops will remain in Syria long after their fight against the Islamic State to ensure that neither Iran nor President Bashar al-Assad of Syria take over areas that have been newly liberated with help from the United States, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson said on Wednesday.

Staying in Syria, Mr. Tillerson said, will help ensure that the Trump administration does not repeat what he described as the mistakes of former President Barack Obama, who withdrew troops from Iraq before the extremist threat was doused and failed to stabilize Libya after NATO airstrikes that led to the overthrow of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

“We cannot allow history to repeat itself in Syria,” Mr. Tillerson said during a speech at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University near San Francisco. “ISIS has one foot in the grave, and by maintaining an American military presence in Syria until the full and complete defeat of ISIS is achieved, it will soon have two.” …”

The goal is to overthrow Bashar al-Assad:

Rex Tillerson sets out 5 goals in Syria 1. ISIS and AQ with both feet in grave. 2. ‘A UN led political solution’ to crisis including a post-Assad leadership, 3. Iranian reach ‘diminished’ 4. free return for refugees/IDPs. 5. No WMD. Greater clarity and ambition than Obama.

We don’t give a shit about democracy. This too is all about Israel.

Unlike Saudi Arabia, Iran is a democracy which isn’t fomenting terrorist attacks against the West, but the Trump administration is calling for regime change there. We also supported the overthrow of Egypt’s government in 2013. Donald Trump just posed for the cameras with President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan who has been a dictator for the last 27 years.

It goes without saying that this isn’t why we voted for Donald Trump. He promised that “we cannot be the policeman of the world” and attacked Hillary Clinton for wanting to intervene in Syria. We don’t support regime change in foreign countries. Elections don’t seem to change the regime in Washington. We get the same policies from the permanent political class no matter who wins.
