What Causes Snoring?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Snoring is a common problem for people around the world.

Not only does it interfere with an individual’s sleep patterns, but it can be even more disruptive to a partner with whom the same bed is shared.

In fact it can be downright destructive to a relationship for that very reason.

The first step to addressing the issue of snoring is to understand what exactly this phenomenon is.

The back of your neck and head is comprised of very soft tissue and passageways known as the aerodigestive tract.

Snoring is basically the vibration of this soft tissue due to an irregular airflow.

Unfortunately, there are multiple ways that this airflow can be restricted to cause snoring and pinpointing the exact cause is usually rather difficult.

Thus snoring has a reputation of being rather hard to stop due to people mistakenly addressing the symptom instead of the cause.

When analyzing what is causing that obnoxious snoring at night, there are several things to consider.

The nasal septum could be deviating from its normal position, or the nose could be collapsing in when inhaling.

These are probably the most common and easily cured forms of snoring.

Some more difficult snoring causes to address include the falling of the tongue into the wall of the throat or an inflamed adenoid tissue.

Further, your snoring could be due to vibration in your tonsils, uvula, or epiglottis (voice box).

So the first step in the quest to stop snoring is determining which of these problems you are having.

It is usually difficult to tell since snoring generally occurs when the subject is unconscious, so a visit to an ear, nose, and throat doctor may be in order.

They have the tools and the expertise necessary to come to a conclusive decision as to the exact source of your snoring problem.

From there, you can tackle the problem head on.
