Pew: Christianity Is Collapsing At Record Pace In The United States

Tell it to the fireman who walks into your burning house to rescue you.

Conservative liberalism has always struck me as an oxymoron.

Philosophically speaking, there is nothing “conservative” about liberalism. It is an inherently destabilizing philosophy. The liberal idea is based on the repudiation of authority and dissolving the social order. It seeks to dissolve all natural distinctions and hierarchies. As a project, conservative liberalism is like the preservation of cancer.

I’ve repeatedly made this point in my attacks on David French. If classical liberalism is compatible with social conservatism, then shouldn’t social conservatism be doing great in United Kingdom and the Netherlands which are its birthplace? Why should the trajectory of Christianity, specifically evangelical Protestantism, be any different in the United States in the long run than in Britain? It was the British who created this cultural package of evangelical Christianity, free-market capitalism and classical liberalism that is defended by French.

Back in July in a particularly vicious and warranted attack on David French, I predicted that classical liberalism would end up killing God and inevitably collapsing into secularism, nihilism, atheism and national suicide in the long run. The bullying of French and the dismantling of his preening, sanctimonious bullshit is absolutely necessary to have the intellectual clarity to save Western civilization because we can’t afford another decade of Frenchism.

“The religious landscape of the United States continues to change at a rapid clip. In Pew Research Center telephone surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019, 65% of American adults describe themselves as Christians when asked about their religion, down 12 percentage points over the past decade. Meanwhile, the religiously unaffiliated share of the population, consisting of people who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular,” now stands at 26%, up from 17% in 2009.

Both Protestantism and Catholicism are experiencing losses of population share. Currently, 43% of U.S. adults identify with Protestantism, down from 51% in 2009. And one-in-five adults (20%) are Catholic, down from 23% in 2009. Meanwhile, all subsets of the religiously unaffiliated population – a group also known as religious “nones” – have seen their numbers swell. Self-described atheists now account for 4% of U.S. adults, up modestly but significantly from 2% in 2009; agnostics make up 5% of U.S. adults, up from 3% a decade ago; and 17% of Americans now describe their religion as “nothing in particular,” up from 12% in 2009. Members of non-Christian religions also have grown modestly as a share of the adult population. …”

None of this comes as any surprise.

If Christianity were thriving under the liberal order, then we wouldn’t be documenting its decline here on a daily basis. Yesterday was International Pronouns Day which was only made possible by the cultural decline of Christianity in Britain and the United States. Culturally speaking, almost every negative trend that we dislike about contemporary America is a product of the steady erosion of our previously dominant Western Christian culture.

Liberalism is killing Christianity. The deregulation of sex and gender and marriage and the family is a liberal idea. The deregulation of national borders is a liberal idea. The deregulation of our culture is a liberal idea. As the sphere of liberalism and free-market capitalism has expanded, the sphere of Christianity has shrunk. See the pornography industry.

Is it possible to come back from the brink of disaster? I would like to think so. I personally know what it is like to come back from atheism and nihilism. Those who do come back aren’t going to fight the culture war like the David Frenches of the world. They won’t be held back by the sentimentality, emotionalism and politeness of French’s evangelicalism.
