Iran to unveil Nagorno-Karabakh peace initiative in Baku

Tehran has prepared a peace plan initiative to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a visit to Baku on Wednesday.
“We have prepared the framework of this plan and during this trip, we will consult and discuss it with our friends in Azerbaijan,” said Araghchi. “It is a plan that in a few stages can bring the situation to lasting peace, end the existing conflicts, and end the occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan.”
Araghchi said that in addition to Azerbaijan, he would also visit and present Iran’s plan to Armenia, Russia and Turkey.
Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh has continued despite a third, US-brokered, ceasefire coming into effect on Monday.

The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday, to suggest a Tehran-brokered ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region would be more “realistic” than the previous three ceasefires.
The Iranian diplomat reported that in over eight hours of negotiations with top Azeri officials, he had received “very useful” insight on the situation in the region and Tehran’s proposal on the peaceful resolution.
“The most important feature of the proposal of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that it has a regional dimension and includes the countries that are involved in the region”, Araghchi said stressing that the “attitude in Azerbaijan was generally positive and constructive.”
He added that the plan has been left for further examination and discussion to the Azeri officials and other regional allies.
