Many leftwing pundits have hailed the dawn of a new progressive era.

In this new progressive era, “woke” has been substituted for “liberal.” We can see this transformation on prominent display in Canada. In recent months, we have seen monuments of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II toppled in Winnipeg, a monument of Canada’s first Prime Minister John A. MacDonald toppled in Kingston and Montreal and a monument of Winston Churchill vandalized in Edmonton. In May, a Canadian street preacher was arrested for inciting people to attend his church.

“Canada’s ruling Liberal government announced on Wednesday that it plans to make online hate speech a crime punishable by as much as $20,000 (roughly $16,250 US) for the first offense and $50,000 ($40,600 US) for the second. The proposal would punish social media users who broke the law but exempt social media companies that host such content from fines. …”

“The Trudeau government is proposing legal changes intended to curb online hate speech and make it easier for the victims of hate speech to launch complaints.

The proposed Bill C-36 includes an addition to the Canadian Human Rights Act that the government says will clarify the definition of online hate speech and list it as a form of discrimination.

“These changes are designed to target the most egregious and clear forms of hate speech that can lead to discrimination and violence,” said Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti at a Wednesday evening news conference.

“They do not target simple expressions of dislike or disdain that pepper everyday discourse, especially online.”

The amended act would define hate speech as “content that expresses detestation or vilification of a person or group,” including over the internet. …”
