He says he can guarantee that a peace deal will be made.
I wonder what information he is referring to that would cause them to make a peace deal so swiftly?

That Russia will end up imposing its will on Ukraine now seems beyond reasonable doubt. Despite suffering terrible casualties and embarrassing battlefield setbacks, Moscow has already forced Kyiv to concede that NATO membership, and probably European Union (EU) membership too, is a non-starter. The separatist enclaves in Donetsk and Luhansk are in no danger of reverting to Ukrainian control, and the only question in the south of the country is how much territory will be added to the Crimean lands pried from Kyiv’s control in 2014.

Ukraine, on the other hand, will likely achieve almost none of its goals. To be sure, Ukraine will continue to inflict losses on the Russian forces, preventing them from taking Kyiv and other major cities and pushing them back here and there in successful, if limited, counter-offensives. But Kyiv will not achieve its operational-level objectives of expelling the Russians from all the territory it has lost since Feb. 24. It will not win a decisive battlefield victory that will vanquish once and for all the Russian invaders.

A Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine appears imminent even as Kyiv holds out for more weapons deliveries for its own push in the south in the spring, according to assessments from US and European officials.

The latest assessments indicate that while the array of arms already sent from the US, Europe and other allies — from ammunition to artillery to tanks and longer-range missile defenses — is helping Ukraine hold Russian forces back, it is not enough for a substantial recouping of territory before Moscow’s offensive. More weapons are coming but not for some months. And that could mean the conflict lasts at least through this year.

“We are on the eve of a very active phase,” Andriy Yusov, a representative for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s intelligence service, said on Wednesday, calling the current situation “very difficult.”

According to NZZ , citing sources in the German government, in January CIA Director Burns went to both Kiev and Moscow with a mission to seek out a peace deal.

The offer to Kiev was: peace for land, the offer to Moscow: land for peace. The “land” is said to have been about 20 percent of Ukrainian territory; That’s about the size of Donbass. Both sides, the two politicians report, refused. The Ukrainians, because they are not willing to cede their territory, the Russians, because they expect to win the war in the long run anyway.

According to the two German foreign politicians, Biden wanted to avoid a protracted war in Ukraine and was willing to sacrifice parts of the country. If this presentation is true, Biden would not be alone in his attitude in Washington. That they have now backtracked on both territorial integrity and sanctions relief can be explained by the reporting of the past few weeks; Russia has mobilized its material and manpower advantages to such an extent that the end conclusion of this war is now obvious even in the West.

One needs no further proof of that than Ukrainian Defense Minister Reznikov’s recent statements about 500,000 Russian troops all around Ukraine and the increasingly pessimistic tone by Western officials…

As early as January 30, Russian troops were confronted by 12 large gangs of militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: 1st brigade, 24th, 53rd, 60th and 28th brigade, 71st brigade, 40th abr, 57th brigade, 111 -I, 119th, 125th and 127th br TerO.

Over the past two days, the 24th and 53rd MBRs (withdrawn for recovery), the 71st Airborne Brigade (near Kremennaya), as well as battalions / bands of mercenaries and the MTR of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, have been withdrawn / retreated from Artemovsk with losses.

The transfer of the 3rd Azov brigade from near Kleshcheevka to the north of Artemovsk was also noted, which will probably cover the withdrawal of the unfinished 57th battalion.

Our units of the 144th Motorized Rifle Division advancing from the area of #Chervonopopovka, have gained up to 2 km in the direction of #Yampolovka – #Ternoye and have consolidated their positions.

▪️ And, judging by the preparation and nature of the operation, this is clearly only its first stage.

▪️ Then there may be further advances to the south of the attack point (to create a “northern claw” to encircle the AFU near #Seversk) and to the west – forcing the #Zherebets river line, to begin the operation that we talked about on the pages of this blog, as a very likely goal of the winter offensive campaign in this direction a few weeks ago.

Situation in the #Zaporozhye Direction until 17:00 on 2 Feb 2023⚡️

📌 There are no significant changes. The AFU command expects a resumption of the Russian offensive in the #Orekhov and #Pologi sectors and is reinforcing the positions.

🔹#Orekhov Sector:

 Asked about their motivation for going to war. The answers I heard, in principle, were expected.
 
- I could not stay away.
- Better here than in prison.
- I want to wash away my sins and make my children proud.
 
There were other answers, but for the most part the motivation is clear. And most importantly, I noticed that all of these guys say with one voice that their lives have changed, their priorities have changed, there are goals and desires that are not related to their former lives. Many of them will go on to work for the company.
 
You can treat them however you like, but these guys are now among those who are defending our land and our homeland.

🔹#Svatovo – #Kremennaya Direction:

Russian aviation and artillery fired on AFU units near #Novoselovskoye LPR. Also, three Ukrainian Grad MLRSs were hit in the vicinity of #Volchansk, Kharkov region. In addition, ours hit the  paratrooper assault brigade near #Karamzinovka LPR and #Serebryanskoye forestry.

🔹#Zaporozhye Direction:

There is no change in the #Zaporozhye direction. The AFU is redeploying reserves to the #Orekhov and #Gulyaypole sectors. Also, the Russian Defence Ministry said strikes were launched against militant units in the #Poltavka areas of #Zaporozhye Region and #Ugledar of the DPR.

- The E.U. will “deepen further our support and cooperation” with Kyiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, while noting that it was the fourth time she has visited Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.

- Von der Leyen said an international center for the prosecution of the crime of aggression in Ukraine will be established in The Hague.

- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised an ongoing anti-corruption drive as “movement toward justice,” after the home of oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky and construction companies were raided in Kyiv and top officials were investigated and dismissed Wednesday.

- Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sidestepped questions about Ukraine’s request for F-16 fighter jets during his visit to the Philippines.

- Russia’s foreign minister appeared to suggest that Moscow would need to launch an offensive in response to the Western supply of weapons in Ukraine.
