The “15,000 Apartments” figure refers to several unrelated, legitimate city policy plans. In late 2025, the City Council approved a rezoning plan in Long Island City allowing for the potential private development of about 15,000 apartments to help alleviate the housing crisis. In other contexts, roughly 15,000 apartments are part of an ongoing city strategy to stabilize tenant-owned housing and the expansion of housing vouchers. The New York City shelter and unsheltered homeless population has unfortunately been high for several years—with over 100,000 individuals in the shelter system—but there was absolutely no overnight tripling of this number. The Mamdani administration has taken legal action and frozen assets of negligent, private slumlords to address thousands of hazardous code violations and force building repairs.
