Mobutu renamed his country Zaire. He renamed the Congo River which became the Zaire River. He renamed major cities like Léopoldville,, Stanleyville, Elisabethville as Kinshasa, Kisangani and Lubumbashi. The point of renaming these places was to whip up national pride.
