Mayor Mamdani’s administration has taken an aggressive stance on regulating tech platforms, but it has not banned them. His actions include forcing delivery apps like Uber Eats to unhide tipping buttons and securing a $5.2 million wage-theft settlement with Uber Eats, Fantuan, and HungryPanda.
Far from causing mass layoffs, the January 2026 settlement actually mandated that Uber reinstate up to 10,000 workers who had been wrongfully deactivated (or “fired”) from the platform. The tension fueling these viral videos stems from a NYC “Just Cause” law (Local Law 52) designed to prevent Uber and Lyft from abruptly deactivating drivers without notice. Uber and Lyft successfully sued the city, securing a preliminary court injunction to block the law. The companies claimed the law would keep unsafe drivers on the road, while worker advocates argued it was necessary to protect drivers from overnight income loss. Mamdani is also backing the Delivery Protection Act, a proposed city law that would force Amazon to directly hire its delivery drivers rather than using third-party subcontractors. Amazon has aggressively lobbied against it, claiming the law could cost thousands of delivery jobs
