HOPE THIS HELPS! I should have elaborated more on my previous comment, but insurance is very extent and sometimes complicated. I am an insurance agent and sometimes is the best that the customer files throught their own insurance depending on the case. When a claim is filed under Collision coverage this might cause the removal or decrease of ‘accident-free discounts’ or ‘good driving discounts’ (depending on your insurance), may also result on a surcharge by renewal. Frequency of claims in a long run also affects the premiums and may cause cancelation or non-renewal and when shopping around for insurance the history report for claims goes up to 3 years in the driver’s record (other companies may go up to 5 to 6 years). That’s why in our office we educate or customers towards what’s the best way to file their claim depending on the situation and if another person is liable definitely is always the best way to file through them. *Premium includes so many factors. It’s always good to ask your agent for advise and understand all your coverages well!  *Worked in TX and TN with different companies. This is just a general explanation and shouldn’t affect your decision on filing a claim but it’s important that you understand company as law is different in different States and insurance have different discounts and requirements.
