Critter-Feeding Might be Wholesome Gardening Fun this Holiday Season

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

16 December 2011 – As winter gardening does not entail as much activities and tasks as regular gardening and landscaping, it might just be worthwhile to add some critter-feeding tasks this winter season.

One way to go about giving to the local birds and critters is by establishing a wildlife tree. Not only is it an environmentally-friendly and attractive decoration on your yard, it can be nice to watch the critters come and go during holiday vacation. Use an evergreen or an old Christmas tree and put it up on your yard. Remember to hang edible décor with biodegradable materials. As for the décor themselves, try:

- Dried corn. Birds and furry critters love them. Dried Indian corn can be colorful, and it’s easy to hang them onto your wildlife tree by drilling a horizontal hole into the cobs and hanging them using cotton string.

- Cranberry and popcorn garland strings are classic. Cranberries or popcorn are easy enough to get your hands on. Once you do, you can combine them for a red and white alternative pattern through a cotton string, and you can add bits of dried fruit too.

- Hanging loops of apple and orange rounds look more like the Christmas décor you use on the tree in your house, and the critters would delight in them.

- Whole sunflower heads, dried and hanged onto the tree, make for bird favorites.

- Garland or individual mixed nuts. You can drill holes in the shells and thread them through completely to make the furry critters pull them down one by one.

- Pinecone feeders offering a mixture of birdseed, chunky peanut butter, and cornmeal makes for great bird feed, as well as neat décor.

There are lots of other things you can try, and remember, you’re not only making a living Christmas tree, you’re also helping the birds and furry creatures get through winter. You and your family and kids can enjoy watching or feeding them all winter. For more landscaping and gardening projects ideal for winter, you can contact your Seattle landscapers.
