Strict Australian Cigarette Laws Have Wider International Effect

14 December 2011 – Australia’s ban of branded cigarette packaging has had a huge impact on the country and its leading tobacco companies, but it has also generated international attention because of its wider influence on international affairs.

Earlier this year Australia banned current cigarette packaging standards and made new ones: only generic font will be used, as well as green and white colors; and the only words that should be in the package is the brand, the cigarette type, and the health warning. In conjunction with earlier bills that made it mandatory for tobacco companies to add in their packaging pictures of grotesque, shock-value images of organs and other bodily parts shriveled and devastated by years of smoking, the strict anti-smoking move has caused an uproar.

Australia’s current governance appears to be staunchly against tobacco and smoking, as could be attested to by anti-smoking bills being passed one after another. Large multinational tobacco companies are sure not to fall back either, as some already subtly defied the most recent bill on packaging by saying they cannot stop their most recent shipments of tobacco from bearing the same branded design and packaging, though they will follow the new standard for future packages.

Many tobacco companies are also pointing to how the current legislative order might be at odds with prevailing international marketing standards pertaining to branding and packaging, almost all of which Australia is beholden to. While the technical, legislative, and international kinks get ironed out, there are also other implications that have far reaching effects.

For one thing, now that Australia’s taken the bold step, would other countries with similarly strict smoking laws follow suit. Canada, for instance, is the very first nation to implement the law on adding images of organs and body parts affected by smoking on cigarette packages. Australia overtook Canada’s initiative, so will it be doing the same soon?

This is more a question on politics and policies, however, and as some would argue, preventing people from smoking should only be as important as stopping those who already are. So far, the contemporary stop smoking Melbourne campaigns are helping out in this endeavor of lessening the number of smokers.
