Exhibition on the history and uses of horn extended due to public demand
‘Horn: an Everyday Plastic‘ is currently taking place at London Metropolitan University’s Frederick Parker Gallery and includes a large selection of horn artefacts and examples of early plastics from private collections.
The exhibition takes a look into the history of horn and plastic materials in our day-to-day and personal lives. It shows that horn was used as an everyday material for familiar objects long before these objects were made in plastic. The exhibition also demonstrates how the early plastic items closely followed the historical horn objects, both in design and workmanship.
Also on display is jewellery containing horn, designed by students from London Metropolitan University – including the winning entries of the Horners Jewellery Design Award for the last three years.
The exhibition not only demonstrates the fascinating history and uses of horn, but also shows how talented jewellery students can turn an ancient craft into modern and fashionable decoration.
Dr. Michael O’Brien, Associate Dean of The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media & Design at London Metropolitan University said: “This is a rare opportunity to see artefacts from the Horners’ collection plus other loaned objects from members of the Plastics Historical Society.”
The exhibition demonstrates the ongoing commitment to science education by the Worshipful Company of Horners.
