The new platform extends PS Electronics’ traditional B2B manufacturing model with a self-service route for engineers, startups and individual hardware developers.

The move gives customers a more direct way to price and order standard PCB projects without first going through the conventional request-for-quotation process.

For much of its history, PS Electronics has operated primarily as a business-to-business manufacturer. Customers typically submitted Gerber files and manufacturing requirements to a sales or engineering team, waited for the project to be reviewed, and then received a quotation before production could begin.

It may also involve checking whether the requested stackup is practical, whether a specified material is available, whether a design exceeds normal manufacturing capabilities, or whether a different process would reduce cost without affecting the finished board.

Building an online quotation system therefore requires more than putting a price calculator on a website. A useful system has to translate a large number of manufacturing variables into a quoting workflow while still recognizing that some projects require human review.

PCBCool does not eliminate that distinction.

Standard projects can move through the online process more quickly, while projects involving unusual materials, advanced structures or other special requirements can continue through PS Electronics’ traditional engineering and quotation process.

In practice, the new platform creates two ways into the same manufacturing organization rather than replacing one with the other.

For established electronics companies, sending an RFQ and working with an account manager is normal procurement practice.

The manufacturing requirements can be very similar even when the purchasing process is not.

Keeping Engineering Support Where It Still Matters

The addition of online ordering does not mean every PCB should be treated as a commodity.

More demanding designs still benefit from direct engineering review. High-density interconnect boards, rigid-flex constructions, RF materials, unusual copper requirements, controlled-impedance structures and other specialized projects often contain variables that cannot be reduced to a simple online price.

PS Electronics will continue to support those projects through its existing engineering and quotation process.

The difference is that customers with conventional PCB requirements no longer necessarily have to follow the same path.

For PCBCool, online quoting is therefore less about replacing engineers with software and more about using software where manual intervention adds little value.

A simple board should be simple to purchase. A complicated board should still receive the attention it requires.
