The Sacrifice and the Seventh Day

The practice of animal sacrifice, a ritual offering of animals to deities, has been a significant part of human religious experience since ancient times. These sacrifices, often performed to seek favor, forgiveness, or bounty from divine entities, have been integral to various cultures and religions across the world. The earliest record of animal sacrifice from archaeology dates back to the Middle Neolithic period, between 4800 and 4000 BC, in a cave in Spain. This evidence is related to a funerary ritual and suggests that animal sacrifice was a common practice during that time.

The ritual sacrifice of livestock may have developed as a continuation of ancient hunting practices as livestock replaced wild game in the food supply during the Neolithic Revolution.

Records of animal sacrifice date back to ancient Mesopotamia, where it was a key aspect of Sumerian and Akkadian religious practices. These civilizations believed that animal offerings were necessary to appease gods and ensure the fertility of their lands. In ancient Egypt, animal sacrifice was equally important, with animals like bulls, birds, and rams being offered to gods like Ra, Osiris, and Isis.

In ancient Greece, rituals like the Olympian sacrifices and the Eleusinian Mysteries involved the offering of animals to gods like Zeus and Demeter.

The Roman practice of animal sacrifice was central to their religious ceremonies, including public events and military victories.

In Asia, Hindu and Buddhist practices evolved, with some sects continuing animal sacrifices and others promoting non-violence and animal welfare.

Judaism prescribed specific animals for sacrifices, as detailed in the Torah.

Today, we embark on a journey to understand how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, fulfilled and replaced the Old Testament sacrificial system with belief in Him. Let us explore this profound truth through the lens of Scripture, allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate our hearts and minds:

The Sacrifice

Genesis 22:8 – The Promise of a Lamb:

In the book of Genesis, we encounter the story of Abraham and Isaac, where God provides a ram as a substitute sacrifice. This event foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, the ultimate Lamb of God, who would offer Himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Exodus 12:3-13 – The Passover Lamb:

During the time of Moses, God instructed the Israelites to sacrifice a spotless lamb and apply its blood to their doorposts, signaling the Lord to pass over their homes during the plague of the firstborn. Jesus, our Passover Lamb, shed His blood on the cross, delivering us from the bondage of sin and death.

Leviticus 16:15-16 – The Day of Atonement:

On the Day of Atonement, the high priest would offer sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people. Yet, Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, offered Himself once and for all, securing eternal redemption for all who believe in Him.

Isaiah 53:5-6 – The Suffering Servant:

In the prophecy of Isaiah, we glimpse the suffering and sacrifice of the Messiah, who bore our sins and transgressions upon Himself. Through His wounds, we find healing, and through His sacrifice, we find redemption.

John 1:29 – The Lamb of God:

John the Baptist proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Through His sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus fulfills the role of the sacrificial lamb, providing atonement and reconciliation for all who believe in Him.

Hebrews 9:11-14 – The Perfect Sacrifice:

The author of Hebrews expounds upon the superiority of Christ’s sacrifice over the offerings of the Old Testament. Jesus, as our High Priest, entered the Most Holy Place once and for all, offering His own blood to cleanse us from sin and purify our consciences.

1 Peter 1:18-19 – Redeemed by the Precious Blood:

Peter reminds us of the precious price of our redemption, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, the unblemished Lamb. Through faith in Him, we are redeemed and made new.

Romans 3:21-26 – Justified by Faith:

Paul teaches that we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, apart from the works of the law. Through His sacrificial death, God demonstrates His righteousness and offers forgiveness and justification to all who believe in Him.

Ephesians 2:13-16 – Reconciled by the Cross:

In Ephesians, we learn that Jesus Christ, through His death on the cross, reconciles us to God and breaks down the barrier of hostility between humanity and God. Through faith in Him, we become one body, united in Christ.

Revelation 5:12 – Worthy is the Lamb:

In the book of Revelation, we catch a glimpse of heavenly worship, where the Lamb who was slain is praised and honored for His sacrificial love. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, is worthy of all honor, glory, and praise for His redemptive work on the cross.

The Seventh Day

Now let’s explore how Jesus’s sacrifice grants us our spiritual “seventh day of rest,” drawing upon scripture for illumination. The concept of rest is deeply embedded in the Judeo-Christian tradition, symbolized most profoundly in the Sabbath, or the seventh day of rest, as described in Genesis.

Genesis 2:2: The Foundation of Rest

The concept of rest in the Bible begins in Genesis 2:2, which states, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” This verse establishes the idea of rest after labor, a pattern that is not only physical but also spiritual. The rest God takes is not due to weariness but signifies completion and satisfaction in His creation.

Isaiah 53:5: The Promise of Healing and Peace

Isaiah 53:5, written centuries before Christ’s birth, prophesies the coming of a figure known as the “Suffering Servant.” It states, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” This verse anticipates the sacrificial act of Jesus Christ, indicating that through His suffering, humanity would find healing and peace — essential components of true rest.

Hebrews 4:1: The Offer of Rest

Hebrews 4:1 expands on this promise, cautioning believers to not miss the rest God offers. It says, “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” This verse implies that the rest promised by God is not automatically experienced; it requires a response, an acceptance of what has been offered through Christ.

Hebrews 4:9-10: Christ’s Sacrifice as Our Rest

Hebrews 4:9-10 brings these concepts together, stating, “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.” This passage explicitly connects the rest of God on the seventh day of creation to the rest offered through Christ’s sacrifice. Just as God rested after His work of creation, believers are invited to rest from their spiritual striving through the completed work of Christ.

Hebrews 10:12: The Finality of Christ’s Work

Hebrews 10:12 underscores the finality and completeness of Christ’s sacrifice: “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.” The imagery of Jesus sitting down contrasts the continuous work of Old Testament priests who stood daily to offer sacrifices. In Jesus’ single, sufficient sacrifice, He achieved what repeated sacrifices could not, thus granting believers eternal rest in the spiritual sense.

The scriptural journey from Genesis to Hebrews presents a cohesive narrative of rest. The Sabbath rest, initially a sign of God’s completion of creation, is fulfilled in the spiritual realm through Christ’s sacrifice. This rest is more than cessation from work; it is a state of spiritual peace and completion, a reprieve from the strife of sin and the effort of self-atonement. In Jesus, believers find their true Sabbath rest, a spiritual seventh day where the soul finds its ultimate peace and completion in Him. This rest is both a present experience and a future promise, a foretaste of the eternal rest with God, free from the labors and burdens of this world.

Let us rejoice in the truth that Jesus Christ, through His sacrificial death and resurrection, fulfilled and replaced the Old Testament sacrificial system. Through faith in Him, we find forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life. May we fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and proclaim His salvation to the ends of the earth.
