American Psychological Association To Classify Belief in God As a Mental Illness

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

JEFFREY DAUGHERTY ( submits this news item by NewNerd with the following commentary: The focus of this article and its assertions seems to me to be dogmatic, controlling fundamentalism religion.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.

The controversial ruling comes after a 5-year study by the APA showed devoutly religious people often suffered from anxiety, emotional distress, hallucinations, and paranoia. The study stated that those who perceived God as punitive was directly related to their poorer health, while those who viewed God as benevolent did not suffer as many mental problems. The religious views of both groups often resulted in them being disconnected from reality.

Dr. Lillian Andrews, professor of psychology, stated, “Every year thousands of people die after refusing life-saving treatment on religious grounds. Even when being told ‘you will die without thistreatment’ patients reject the idea and believe that their God will still save them. Those lives could be saved simply by classifying those people as mentally unfit for decision making.”

“Jehovah Witnesses for instance,” Dr. Andrews continued, “will not accept blood under any circumstance. They would rather die than to receive life-saving donor blood. Many religious people believe they have “healing power” in their hands. Many believe they can communicate with God using a personal language, which is unknown to anyone but the communicator and God (known as speaking in tongues). Many often tell of seeing spirits. All of these are signs of amental break and a loss of touch with reality. Religious belief and the angry God phenomenon has caused chaos, destruction, death, and wars for centuries. The time for evolving into a modern society and classifying these archaic beliefs as a mental disorder has been long overdue. This is the first of many steps to a positive direction.”

With the new classification, the APA will lobby to introduce legislation which would allow doctors the right to force life-saving treatment on those who refuse it for spiritual reasons on the grounds that they are mentally incapable of making decisions about their health.

The American Psychological Association says more information about the study and the new classification will be made available to the public in their upcoming journal (which is expected to be release in early August).

The APA should classify anyone who thinks they are a Republican or a Democrat to have a mental illness.

      • Anonymous

True, but I believe in Jesus Christ and don’t mind being called insane. I’d rather own being called crazy, than own being a fool.

Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”…

And I’d rather own being crazy, that winding up some fool in eternal hell, begging for a drop of water from a crazy.

        Luke 16

23 In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

        Crazy is good.

Pioneering advances in bloodless surgery, Doctors for Jehovah’ s Witnesses have formulated new and safer forms of surgery that has saved thousands more lives than just the Witnesses theselves. Do some research you will be amazed.

    • Everette

This is double standards ! What the hell is euthanasia ? Or right to die ? Obama care has this within its plans . Yet religious groups choosing to not receive treatment so the doctors can make money is insanity ? It is Said their treatments torcher their patents . Hippocrates !!! This is nothing more than sinfull people filling guilty for others believing in God and serving as a reminder that God exist . The FOOL has said there is no GOD! Which came first the chicken or the egg ? Take a shoe box and a pen . Take the pen apart put it in the box . When it comes back together I will believe your stupidy . Let’s help you out ! Pick up the box and start shaking it . When the pen becomes assembled back together I will say I am sorry and stupid . Life has more complexity than that pen . And to say it all happened by chance is ignorance at its highest level of stupidity . It had to be manipulated by a higher power . Some say mother nature . But it still was somebody . Some say God which I believe it was . The universe with its system of balance and precision is so awesome that a computer can calculate The distance and timing of the crossing and send rockets to distance planets and meet up with them many years later . And some FOOL wants to say there is no GOD . These are the insane ones . These are the ones that need to be locked up !!! Small minds at work again ! Idiots
CERN is working from what they have discovered as the God partial . They are attempting to recreate life in a 17 mile long machine so they can say they are like God . These are the greatest scientist in the world . Yet they speak of the God partical that brought everything into existence . A scientist said that the darkness between Atoms contains a power so great that if tapped could run and power cities forever . What is in this darkness ? God in the bible makes a statement that He hides Himself in the darkness . And that in Him ALL things consist and are held together . Oh I forgot scientist are also trying to find out what is the glue that holds atoms at separate distances yet together in order to form the chair you set your butts in . It should crumble and become dust . The darkness contains GOD . And this dark space between the atoms the scientist says contains more power than the atom when split . How is so much power packed up in something so small that the human eye cannot see it ? Where did this power come from ? Yet when being observed under a electron microscope every individual sees something different . Scientist say that each person is actually manipulating with their minds the atoms being observed so that they dance to the rhythm of their minds . So like God said He has given Mankind power over His creation . And yet man chooses to say their is no GOD . These are the insane !!!

Freedom of religion, in the USA….

      • maxxy

…2cool….what pixie is talking about is ‘freedom, FROM religion’. pixie is a self elevated “creator of his own soul”. He’s taken full responsibility for his “Godlessness”. He sees no reasonable possibility of immortality. He’s tied to the material world, and won’t come close to recognizing the coming “Good News”, He’ll have nothing to do with any “Savior”….he has, in his mind, said,” there is no God, there is no Jesus.” There is nothing that any of us can do for him. He is nothing, if not hostile to any mention of God, Christ or ‘redemption’. I can see his deep anger for what it is…..”Over compensation for a life of self loathing and doubt”, leading to meaninglessness, and a dearth of spiritual purpose…..except to demean and attempt to sow seeds of discord. He’s is one of the lowest and most detestable people on this site. There is an abrogation against giving up on a person, like him, but I believe he’s coming very close to being a ‘lost cause’. Personally, I feel he’s got a demonic spirit working within him………and he’s in love with the damned thing.

“According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.”

That’s because in that example “where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters”, it is a mental illness.

It’s the result of being brainwashed from birth that contradictions = truth. When people abused and inflicted with such brain damage try to think critically, they can’t, their brain shuts down in cognitive dissonance, utter confusion. The fact that the damage takes place when young children are taught contradictions are truth, amounts to child abuse by their responsible adults, because the resulting brain damage is permanent.

      • Pix

Add: Or what are you suggesting exactly. That people who have been brainwashed with ‘contradictions are truth’, to the point where they are incapable of any “conscientious decisions about common sense matters”, that such an impoverished mental state is perfectly ok?

You’re so busy trying to save face defending your religions method of gaining members, you’ve missed the point of what is being said… you must be an example of what they are talking about.

      • Deputy Dawg

My cousin Brian a devoted Catholic (the harlot) was a renowned physicist. I’d be willing to bet his IQ made yours look pretty grim in comparison. The confusion begins when pride filled and judgmental people like yourself consider themselves above others, authorities on everything under the sun, seeing themselves as divinely enlightened having the answers to universal questions that imitate in perplexity the puny revelations grasped by the carnal mind.

Considering where we are in time this might be an appropriate time to reevaluate your position. We God’s children, those who love and obey Him follow God’s direction because that is what is righteous before Him. We humbly accept the reality that has been proven scientifically over and over that our understanding of the spirit and universe is extremely limited. We strive to live His ways knowing that when exercised this way of life brings, hope in an increasingly hostile world, fulfillment in love and eternal happiness. I’m sorry your missing out!

        • Pix

JUST-MY-OPINION “My cousin Brian a devoted Catholic (the harlot) was a renowned physicist. I’d be willing to bet his IQ made yours look pretty grim in comparison”

I doubt it, I have more qualifications than a physicist. Anthropology requires more skills and knowledge, eg history, languages and psychology, all you need with physics is a good understanding of mathematics.

I’m not being judgemental, just saying it how it is. If you don’t think it’s immoral to damage children’s brains, robbing them of their critical thinking skills, that’s your opinion flying in the face of how it is.

I don’t consider myself above others, if I did I wouldn’t bother with BiN or replying to your insulting comments. And I have never once suggested I know everything, on the contrary. But what I do know how to do is look things up and think critically. What has that got to do with carnal knowledge?.. Obsessed with sex much, or are you just lacking in critical thinking skills you throw words around without understanding what you’re saying?

What’s to reevaluate? The fact that the religious have no critical thinking skills is what this article is about, not the level of belief in plagiarised pagan mystery cult. Your deity commands you to burn the witch, kill the homosexual, stone the adulterer to death, also kill people for eating shellfish and pork, and for wearing mix fabrics. You do not obey your deity at all, go forth and murder as your completely immoral demon deity commands over stupid piffling misnomers, or stfu.

        • Pix

JUST-MY-OPINION “I’m sorry your missing out!”

No I’m not, you are, your brainwashed from birth indoctrination, has robbed you of critical thinking skills. Your comment has a lot in common with the mentally damaged, who do not believe they are mentally damaged, but that everyone else is,.. you’re in full denial.

    • Deputy Dawg

Nazi Germany all over again. The problem isn’t really religious beliefs which has been the moral fabric civilized nations are built upon, it is that God’s Ways are not compatible with their master the devil’s. In their not so humble opinions we Christians would have to be totally insane to disagree with the bright ideas of a government run by demon possessed, narcissistic sociopaths at the top and absolute mindless morons at the lower end.

Most of these so called authorities in the psychiatric field are the ones who are truly mentally ill. Look at the history of the field and what these lunatics did to their subjects who merely exhibited normal human emotion. They did frontal lobotomies, submerged patients in ice water and literally tortured people in the name of medicine.

As a child who grew up in the system I have seen my share of these perpetrators in action. My personal observation was most of the males who aren’t openly gay seemed to carry a preference for the company of young boys. They of course consider this normal behavior where the belief in Yahweh is deemed by them to be mental illness.

I call for a referendum to outlaw phony medicine. I say that anyone living the self stroking delusion that suggests they have anymore knowledge than the next guy about the inner workings of thought is mentally ill. We need to create a special FEMA camp just for these arrogant screwballs.

      • HORUS

For having had to deal many times over with people with mental illness over the years, meds are to be taken for a reason.

One person in particular turned to RELIGION as obsession – speaking in tongues and receiving messages from Virgin Mary… Now don’t tell me that’s okay. Plus anyone who told stop meddling in their affairs (she’d go ALL BIBLE-THUMPING ON YOU), she’d call the cops. Stuff like that is UNACCEPTABLE.
The danger about being blindly religious is that one loses one’s critical thinking, becomes intolerant of other people’s point of view as seen in a lot of comments on BIN.

Mental illness is real and people diagnosed with such issues should be responsible to take their meds conscientiously just like a diabetic takes his insulin or a cardiac patient takes his aspirin.
I shiver at the thought that some people think that they’re too intelligent to take their meds – ’cause it either kills their buzz or their inspiration.

        • Deputy Dawg

The concept you describe is certainly not confined to religion. Obsessions take many forms. Are we to consider all diverse variations in thought mental illness? The truth is that if someone is truly sick reality may very well escape them and they may respond accordingly, however others who have made the well informed and conscious choice to follow scriptural guidance, applying it to their lives in cooperation with God’s instruction this is preference, not mental illness. Just because you don’t agree with their convictions doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them. Believe me when I say, that’s you over inflated ego talking!

          • Big dog.../small fish...

there’s scriptural guidance as you say and then there’s not being to think with common sense. The earth wasn’t created in 7 days and mankind is not 6,000 years old.
Jesus was born, he preached, he was murdered for his convictions and ascended but he ain’t coming back dude!

            • maxxy

….Dogonneit…..”the bible the ultimate fairy tale to keep the uneducated Un-educated and the flock docile.”
My experience negates what you just wrote. I’m ‘very’ well educated. And far from docile. And a very enthusiastic follower of Jesus Christ.
….I have no affiliation with any earthly church, or with any particular theosophy, except the truth given to me by God Himself……I believe that religion, in general, can do nothing for the world….The ‘religions’ of the earth have all been corrupted and owe their existence to some other entity but God. Religious thought is superstitious at best, and deadly at worst. Christianity has been elevated above all. Is proving daily to hold “pertinent’ info….that can help all people in these times.

          • Big dog.../small fish...

Oh and by the way I do believe in GOD and his goodness. But the rest of the catholic dogma I do without.

      • Deputy Dawg

Just to clarify about the referendum part; I was jesting to drive home my point. Factually I do not consider myself part of Satan’s world so the politics of this evil world are none of my concern. Truth is, I don’t care who is in charge right now. Man is so corrupt. Those with an attachment to power can fight out among themselves who will rule and where. As a Christian my candidate has not come on scene yet. When Christ returns, well he’s got my vote and I suspect he’ll win hands down.

        • Anonymous

Ironic that, as a Christian, I’m also cool, quite calm and sane, as there’s nothing at all surprising going on. It’s people who don’t see the forest for the trees, that don’t understand the powers-that-be, who are in a very real sense mentally ill, in that they don’t really understand the world around them, are in a mental fog and victims of a host of lies.

If you’ve noticed, it’s the antichrists who are in an emotional tizzy and unstable people, not the people of God, and certainly not God. Christ has always had my vote, too. We already know the end of the story, and, as to now, nothing new under the sun. The evil do as the evil do. So what?

          Psalms 2

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

          • Anonymous

This PSALM is worth studying in detail, follow the, notes and cross references.
in a different version it goes like this. PSALM 2. Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things?
The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord, and against his Christ.
Let us break their bonds asunder: and let us cast away their yoke from us.
He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall deride them.
Then shall he speak to them in his anger , and trouble them in his rage.
…….. psychology is of the evil one….

JUST-MY-OPINION “Nazi Germany all over again.”

If that was true, you damaged in the head with zero critical thinking skills folk, would have been rounded up into FEMA camps and vaccinated by now. Some very clever people have created a vaccine that cures peoples insanity, specifically faith in the unsubstantiated. It will cure all sorts of delusional mental ill health conditions, restoring people to the real world. But keep up your vitriolic terrorist attacks on the majority of sane people, the sooner it will end up being used on all religious folks en mass, rather than on an individual basis. Desperate times requires desperate measures. If I were you, I’d stfu and stop waving an ‘I’m delusionally insane’ flag.

      Five Stages for Establishing Persecution

History has proved that Christianity and all that God holds dear has been under direct persecution for millennia’s. The following stages have consistently been enacted upon to bring about the “change” that the ungodly desire:

Stage one: Define the opposition (Christianity, Conservativism, Tea Party movement, etc.)
Stage two: Marginalize the opposition (characterize the “opposition” as “extremists” and/or “hatemongers”)
Stage Three: Vilify the opposition (convince the populous that the “opposition” is responsible for all of the world’s problems)
Stage Four: Pass laws criminalizing the activities of the opposition (create legislation to silence the “opposition”) *I believe we are currently in this stage.
Stage Five: Enforce the new laws against the opposition (total oppression of the “opposition” is the law of the land)
IF being a Christian became illegal, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

      • takeahardright

I would confess my love for Christ and face the persecution. God is Great! Maranatha.

    • CrowPie

Great. It’s about time being a person of Faith was a benefit in worldly society.

We’ll now be able to claim insanity, draw crazy cheques and get free insurance through Obamacare.

People have been raised on Evolution and uncaring teachings from childhood. Yet when you look at Cern you see it riddled with religious artifacts, when you see persons in authority they generally give religious hand signs and speak of their gods. Keeping people in the dark is what they are good at, but they all know that there is invisible intelligent forces that are manipulating the human sphere. You can ignore the facts for only so long.
