American Psychological Association To Classify Belief in God As a Mental Illness

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.
The controversial ruling comes after a 5-year study by the APA showed devoutly religious people often suffered from anxiety, emotional distress, hallucinations, and paranoia. The study stated that those who perceived God as punitive was directly related to their poorer health, while those who viewed God as benevolent did not suffer as many mental problems. The religious views of both groups often resulted in them being disconnected from reality.
Dr. Lillian Andrews, professor of psychology, stated, “Every year thousands of people die after refusing life-saving treatment on religious grounds. Even when being told ‘you will die without thistreatment’ patients reject the idea and believe that their God will still save them. Those lives could be saved simply by classifying those people as mentally unfit for decision making.”
“Jehovah Witnesses for instance,” Dr. Andrews continued, “will not accept blood under any circumstance. They would rather die than to receive life-saving donor blood. Many religious people believe they have “healing power” in their hands. Many believe they can communicate with God using a personal language, which is unknown to anyone but the communicator and God (known as speaking in tongues). Many often tell of seeing spirits. All of these are signs of amental break and a loss of touch with reality. Religious belief and the angry God phenomenon has caused chaos, destruction, death, and wars for centuries. The time for evolving into a modern society and classifying these archaic beliefs as a mental disorder has been long overdue. This is the first of many steps to a positive direction.”
With the new classification, the APA will lobby to introduce legislation which would allow doctors the right to force life-saving treatment on those who refuse it for spiritual reasons on the grounds that they are mentally incapable of making decisions about their health.
The American Psychological Association says more information about the study and the new classification will be made available to the public in their upcoming journal (which is expected to be release in early August).

When people abused and inflicted with such brain damage try to think critically, they can’t, their brain shuts down in cognitive dissonance, utter confusion. The fact that the damage takes place when young children are taught contradictions are truth, amounts to child abuse by their responsible adults, because the resulting brain damage is permanent.

I doubt it, I have more qualifications than a physicist. Anthropology requires more skills and knowledge, eg history, languages and psychology, all you need with physics is a good understanding of mathematics.

For having had to deal many times over with people with mental illness over the years, meds are to be taken for a reason.
One person in particular turned to RELIGION as obsession – speaking in tongues and receiving messages from Virgin Mary… Now don’t tell me that’s okay. Plus anyone who told stop meddling in their affairs (she’d go ALL BIBLE-THUMPING ON YOU), she’d call the cops. Stuff like that is UNACCEPTABLE.
The danger about being blindly religious is that one loses one’s critical thinking, becomes intolerant of other people’s point of view as seen in a lot of comments on BIN.
Mental illness is real and people diagnosed with such issues should be responsible to take their meds conscientiously just like a diabetic takes his insulin or a cardiac patient takes his aspirin.
I shiver at the thought that some people think that they’re too intelligent to take their meds – ’cause it either kills their buzz or their inspiration.
The concept you describe is certainly not confined to religion. Obsessions take many forms. Are we to consider all diverse variations in thought mental illness? The truth is that if someone is truly sick reality may very well escape them and they may respond accordingly, however others who have made the well informed and conscious choice to follow scriptural guidance, applying it to their lives in cooperation with God’s instruction this is preference, not mental illness. Just because you don’t agree with their convictions doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them. Believe me when I say, that’s you over inflated ego talking!

Just to clarify about the referendum part; I was jesting to drive home my point. Factually I do not consider myself part of Satan’s world so the politics of this evil world are none of my concern. As a Christian my candidate has not come on scene yet. When Christ returns, well he’s got my vote and I suspect he’ll win hands down.

People have been raised on Evolution and uncaring teachings from childhood.
